🚨 RBI's New Digital Fraud Compensation Rules (Effective 1 Jan 2027)

If you lose money due to an online banking/digital payment fraud, you may be eligible for compensation under RBI's new framework.

Key Highlights:

• Applicable for fraud losses up to ₹50,000.

• Compensation: 85% of the net loss or ₹25,000, whichever is lower.

Example:
Loss of ₹20,000 → Compensation of ₹17,000 (85%).
Loss of ₹40,000 → Compensation of ₹25,000 (capped).

Report the fraud within 5 calendar days to both:
✓Your bank
✓National Cyber Helpline 1930 / Cyber Crime Portal

• If the fraud occurred due to the bank's deficiency, compensation is not affected by the reporting timeline.

• The burden of proof now shifts to the bank. The bank has to establish that the customer was at fault. This is a major change from the earlier framework.

• The compensation benefit can be availed only once in a customer's lifetime.

Government Plans to Replace WPI with PPI

The Government is planning to replace the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) with the Producer Price Index (PPI) over the next 4-5 years. For now, it has started collecting data and testing the new index.

First, understand these terms:

1) WPI (Wholesale Price Index): Measures inflation based on the prices of goods sold in the wholesale market.

2) PPI (Producer Price Index): Measures changes in prices received by producers (manufacturers) before goods reach wholesalers or consumers. It gives a better picture of inflation at the production stage.

Why is this important?

Inflation indices like CPI and WPI/PPI are used not only to measure inflation but also in important economic indicators such as:

GDP (Gross Domestic Product) – the total value of goods and services produced in the economy.
IIP (Index of Industrial Production) – measures the growth of industrial output.

The government has already started using PPI instead of WPI in some GDP and IIP calculations, even though WPI will continue as the official index for a few more years.

Types of Producer Price Index (PPI)

1. Output PPI (OPPI)
Measures the prices that producers receive when they sell their products.
Shows inflation at the factory gate.

2. Input PPI (IPPI)
Measures the cost of raw materials, fuel, and other inputs used in production.
Indicates cost pressures faced by producers.

3. Service PPI (SPPI)
Measures price changes in services such as transport, banking, insurance, and telecommunications.
