The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming (PROG) Rules, 2026, which operationalize the PROG Act, 2025, came into force from May 1, 2026

Key Changes and Highlights

Regulation of Permissible Games: Only permissible online social games (for recreation/education) and registered e-sports are allowed. They must not involve wagers.

Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI): A new, digital-first central regulator has been established under MeitY to maintain a list of banned money games, handle complaints, and oversee compliance.

Registration Regime: While not universal, the government can mandate registration for specific, high-risk, or large-scale games, which will be valid for 10 years

Penalties and Enforcement:- The rules and the parent Act introduce severe penalties for non-compliance, with cases to be resolved within 90 days

Offering Online Money Gaming Services (OMG):
First offense: Up to 3 years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to ₹1 crore.

Repeat offense: Up to 5 years imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹2 crore.

Advertising or Promoting Banned Games:
Imprisonment of up to 2 years and/or a fine up to ₹50 lakh.
Repeat offense: Up to 3 years imprisonment and a fine up to ₹1 crore.

Facilitating Financial Transactions: Banks or payment gateways enabling transactions for banned apps face similar criminal liabilities (up to 3 years jail / ₹1 crore fine).

Non-compliance with Regulatory Orders: A civil penalty of up to ₹10 lakh, along with the potential suspension or cancellation of the platform's registration.

Nature of Offenses: Key offenses are cognizable and non-bailable.

India's gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue hit a record high of ₹2.43 lakh crore in April 2026, marking an 8.7% year-on-year increase from ₹2.23 lakh crore in April 2025.

This is the highest monthly GST collection since the tax regime's inception in 2017.
