The molting process is the hardest test in the life of crabs, and it happens on average once every 4 months. The crab's molt lasts for several hours, and with considerable effort the animal manages to pull all four pairs of legs, claws, and trunk out of the old shell in turn. After molting, the crab's body becomes soft and vulnerable. He does not come out of his hiding place for several days until the new shell hardens.
