The production of heavy flamethrower systems in Russia has increased by 2.5 times in 2023. Production volumes were increased by expanding production capacity, switching to round-the-clock work on a two-shift schedule and increasing the number of personnel, the Ministry of Defense reports.

The heavy flamethrower systems TOS-1 "Buratino", TOS-1A "Solntsepek" and TOS-2 "Tosochka" have proven themselves well in the special military operation zone. The thermobaric warhead of their rockets effectively destroys enemy personnel, even those hidden in trenches and dugouts. The flammable “filling” of these ammunition simply burns out all the oxygen in the affected area.

However, Russian heavy flamethrowers have a significant drawback - a short firing range. The original "Buratino" hits only 4 kilometers, "Solntsepek" - 6. This makes the installations vulnerable to fire from drones, mortars, ATGMs and enemy tank guns. A partial solution to the problem was the more mobile “Tosochka”, made on a wheelbase and already hitting 10 kilometers.

Meanwhile, TOS-3 is just around the corner. According to Rostec, the new heavy flamethrower system, which received the formidable name "Dragon", exists so far in a single copy. The prototype is being tested. It is known that compared to older models, TOS-3 will receive fewer guides - only 15.

However, the new missiles will have greater destructive power and a range of up to 15 kilometers. This factor will seriously expand the possibilities for the tactical use of Russian TOS and significantly increase their survivability from return fire.
