"Kiev may face pressure to show military success ahead of the November US elections to justify aid," the article said.

Friedman believes it is unlikely that new US aid to Ukraine will help counter Russia's offensive; it can only be slowed down.

He also writes that Ukrainian troops will need time to recover from a difficult start to the year.
