By any measure, Texan nationalists have had a busy couple of years. Most recently, a nearly 140,000-signature petition to consider an advisory referendum on Texas independence during the 2022 gubernatorial primary was denied by the state's GOP.

Notably, some prominent Texan Republicans have toyed with, if not outright endorsed, secession from the Union. Chip Roy for one said federal authorities either can't or won't "defend our borders from invasion" and asked out loud if secession was necessary.

Where this may matter most in the coming days is if Biden attempts to federalize the National Guards.

Trying to overrule one governor is one thing. Trying to overrule more than half the country standing in formal support is something else altogether.
