When working on a writing ✏️ assignment, it is common to compare your own ideas with those of other authors. The goal is to develop an idea or explicate its nuances.

Students, teacher-researchers 🔎 and professional writers often carry out this kind of work. They may cite a psychological study, an excerpt from a scientific article, a passage from a law article, a collective publication, etc.

They are required to respect citation standards and intellectual property in order to avoid plagiarism and associated penalties. But what exactly is 🤔 plagiarism? Are there different forms of plagiarism?

Why is Referencing ✏️ important?

Citations are not used simply to avoid plagiarism; they have other important ⭐ roles too.

Plagiarism often involves using someone else’s words or ideas without proper citation, but you can also plagiarize yourself.

Self-plagiarism means reusing work that you have already published or submitted for a class. It can involve re-submitting an entire paper, copying or paraphrasing passages or excerpts, or recycling previously-collected data.

Academic Integrity 🎯 Quiz

Test your knowledge and understanding of academic dishonesty by answering the following questions.

You are given a take home exam with instructions not to use your notes, textbook or any other outside sources while completing the exam. You are having difficulty figuring out the answer to a couple of problems. Your roommate is in the class as well, and you discuss the topic with her, but don’t discuss specific questions.

A. There is no problem with this scenario.
B. You and your roommate are responsible for cheating for collaborating with another person without authorization.
C. Your roommate is responsible for cheating because she started the conversation about the exam. You are not responsible.
D. The exam was extremely difficult, and you know that everyone else worked on the test together so you feel that your actions are justified.

How to develop ↗️ and preserve Integrity?

🔵 Step 1: Define Your Values

You can't live by values if you don't know what you truly believe in. So, start by defining your core values. These are the values that, no matter what the consequence, you're not going to compromise on.

🔵 Step 2: Analyze Every Choice You Make

Often, people cut corners or make bad choices when they think no one is watching. Having integrity means that, no matter what, you make the right choice – especially when no one is watching!

You'll usually know what's right and wrong, although sometimes you might need some quiet time to figure it out. If you're not sure what the right choice is, ask yourself these two questions:

1. "If my choice was printed on the front page of the newspaper for everyone to see, would I feel OK about it?"
2. "If I make this choice, will I feel OK with myself afterwards?"

Remember, honesty and integrity aren't values that you should live by when it's convenient; they're values that you should live by all the time. This includes the big choices and the little choices – the choices everyone sees, and the choices that no one sees.

The best way to develop personal 🌟 integrity is to get started

You likely act with personal integrity already, but if you think that you have some areas to work on, you’re not alone. Integrity is a lifelong journey that requires patience as you cultivate this critical life skill.

You’ll also need to give yourself some grace. There will be times along the way where you don’t show integrity or aren’t as honest as you could have been. You can use these experiences as learning opportunities to find out what went ❌ wrong, and then own up and correct your mistake.

Regardless of where you are in your journey to demonstrating personal integrity, you’ll never improve if you don’t get started. Begin by reflecting on areas in your personal life or workplace where you can demonstrate integrity. Then, you can focus on developing the five attributes of personal integrity: follow a set of values, be honest, help others, lead by example, and take responsibility. Ask a trusted friend or a life coach to help keep you accountable, and you’ll see that showing integrity will soon become second nature.
