Grammar Tip

πŸ”† Percentage, proportion, number and amount are the most common terms used to describe the quantities shown in graphs and charts in Academic Writing Task 1.

πŸ”ΉThe percentage of people who read print books decreased.
πŸ”ΉThe proportion of people who read e-books was larger/smaller in 2013 than in 2012.
πŸ”ΉThe number of people who prefer e-books increased.
πŸ”ΉTeenagers spend a smaller amount on books than older people.

☝️ For number you must have a plural, countable noun following. Remember also that amount should be used for uncountable nouns.

Did you know that the word β€œhappy πŸ˜Šβ€ is used three times more often than the word β€œsadπŸ™β€? It seems positivity shines through in our language! And, there was no word for the color orange until about 450 years ago. Plus, orange, purple, and silver are all words (and colors) that don’t rhyme1. Isn’t language fascinating? 🍊🌈
