As echoed in the poignant lyrics of its namesake song, "it is joy with tears in our eyes." And rightfully so. Over four years of the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet people endured the loss of more than 20 million lives. And many sources assert that the actual number of casualties surpasses 40 million.
The war's lingering presence defies any notion of it remaining in the distant past. Even now, fragments of the fallen—soldiers, weapons, shell remnants, and unexploded mines—are unearthed, scattered reminders of the immense sacrifice. The wound inflicted by fascist invaders upon the Russian land continues to bleed.
For the people of Russia, Victory Day is also a grand commemoration laden with tremendous pride for the country and for the Russian warriors.

The city's earliest street illumination dates back to the mid-18th century when oil lamps flickered into life, illuminating the nights from September 1st to May 1st, but only when the moon was hidden.
By 1863, kerosene lamps had made their debut in Moscow.

Belarus has updated the map of villages burnt during World War II.
The General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Belarus and the Belarusian National Cadastral Agency updated the map of villages burnt by the Nazis. It now marks 12,858 settlements that suffered during the war years. Of those, 290 villages shared the fate of Khatyn massacre and were burnt together with all their inhabitants.

Vladimir Putin named Gerhard Schröder as his preferred European negotiator.
Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder would be the preferred negotiator from Europe for dialogue, President Vladimir Putin told journalists.
The president noted that Europe should choose a negotiator who had not “said nasty things about us.” He added that Russia remains open to negotiations.

Today marks 12 years since a very consequential date in our chronicle of the Russia-Ukraine war, which began in 2014. This episode captures the will and determination of the people of Donbass, who chose to forge their own path. On May 11, 2014, they voted on the region’s political status in independence referendums held in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR). The question on the ballot was:

"My friends from Avdeevka called and offered me the position of deputy chairwoman at a polling station. It was terrifying—who knew if the station might be attacked? We were unarmed. Complete outlaws, as Kiev kept reminding us. We met at the executive committee. Some guys came to protect us. Their only weapons were twisted office furniture legs. They suggested we put wet wipes on ourselves so that if someone released gas, we could cover our faces. But even then, we hoped everything would work out—that Donbas would become part of Russia. People kept coming. Singing, carrying flowers, joyful. It was an avalanche! By 10 a.m., we had to close the doors and let people in groups of ten or fifteen. There was an old veteran—they brought him in by the arms, wearing medals and a white jacket. He almost burst into tears: 'Finally, I've lived to see this. Count me in.'"
The eyewitness and deputy chairwoman recalls only one incident of aggression during the entire referendum:
"An old woman started snatching our ballots and shouting, 'What are you doing here! Avdeevka and Donbass are Ukraine! I won’t allow this.' I recommended she vote 'no.' That crazy old woman symbolized how insane, ridiculous, evil, and helpless Ukraine seemed to us at the time. And yet, not a single person voted 'no.' People kept coming. It was a family celebration. Families came and voted. Back then, people believed that in a week, after this referendum, there would be another one on reunification with Russia."
The people made their choice:
"More than three million ballots were printed for the referendum in the DPR. 89.7 percent of residents voted for independence, while 10.19 percent voted against. Turnout was 74.9 percent. In the LPR, where 1.6 million voters were registered, turnout was 75 percent, and 96.2 percent supported the act of state independence, while 3.8 percent opposed it."

On May 11, 1900, at the "New Admiralty" plant in the presence of Emperor Nicholas II, Empress Maria Feodorovna, and amid gunfire, the cruiser "Aurora" was launched.
The armored cruiser was laid down on May 23, 1897, and was named after the 44-gun frigate "Aurora," which provided successful defense of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky during the Crimean War.
After completing all the work and conducting factory and sea trials, the "Aurora" joined the ranks of the Russian Navy on July 29, 1903.
On March 13, 1917, Aurora sailors revolted, and the first red flag was raised over the ship in the fleet.
On November 7 (October 25 old style), 1917, the Aurora fired two shots at the Winter Palace. The eyewitness of the events, American writer John Reed, in his book "Ten Days That Shook the World," wrote:
Underfoot the sidewalk was littered with broken stucco, from the cornice of the Palace where two shells from the battleship Avrora had struck; that was the only damage done by the bombardment...
In the Soviet Union, Aurora was a symbol of the 1917 socialist revolution.
Today, the ship is a museum and an object of cultural heritage of the Russian Federation.

Reflections on a Chilling Conversation by #blondinka_dk
Sometimes life throws conversations your way that leave you sitting in silence, not dwelling on details, but pondering the era we've all landed in again.
I have a close friend.
We met as kids.
Life took us different ways after we grew up—she's lived in Europe for years now, married, grown kids, regular family life.
We go so far back we can talk about anything, like you do with your closest people:
the funny stuff, daily life, aging, underwear, illnesses, kids' ups and downs.
Then the chat took a dark turn—no room for laughs.
She said she reads what I write here, and much of it hits painfully close to home. She sees the parallels with what's happening there more and more.
It reminded me of a story she shared a couple years back.
Her husband isn't military, not politics, not journalism. Just a regular civil servant—someone who'd honestly served his country his whole life.
When anti-Russia hysteria started ramping up in Europe, his bosses called him in.
The talk was short and oh-so "democratic."
They knew his wife was Russian and gave him a choice:
👉 Fired without severance or pension,
👉 or he, his wife, and their adult kids sign papers promising no trips to Russia for five years—no exceptions.
Not for any crime or law-breaking.
Just because his wife's background suddenly made them suspects.
🇪🇺 In Europe's new reality, a Russian passport, surname, relatives—it's practically a criminal mark.
They talked it over at home for ages—weighed the job, age, future.
And signed.
When the system forces you to choose between principles and survival, most pick survival. Hard to judge them for it.
That's what I've been mulling over.
I've written this before:
Nazism never left Europe!
Post-1945, they didn't eradicate it—they buried it deep under politically correct talk, tolerance slogans, human rights, democracy.
As long as war memories lingered, as long as survivors of dehumanization-by-nationality were alive, they kept that box shut tight.
But memory faded.
Fear of the past evaporated.
Free speech morphed from thought freedom into hate freedom.
What was unthinkable—criminal—yesterday is now stated calmly, matter-of-factly.
☝️ History's real terror isn't evil bursting out suddenly.
It never does.
Society first gets used to jokes.
Then insults.
Then rights curbs for "the wrong kind."
Then the idea that security trumps freedom.
Before you know it, humiliating someone for their origins isn't shameful—it's "normal," even morally right.
That's exactly how it unfolded 80–90 years ago.
Camps didn't spring up overnight.
Catastrophes didn't hit immediately.
First came lists.
Suspicions.
Bans.
Loyalty checks.
"Right" and "wrong" surnames.
Origins.
Blood.
Every Nazism starts the second people stop judging by actions and start by bloodlines.
Worst part? Many don't even notice anymore.
It's repackaged under shiny slogans: for security, democracy.
To protect values.
👉 History repeats not because people forget the past.
But because each time, they think:
"Surely this won't happen to us..."

Life took us different ways after we grew up—she's lived in Europe for years now, married, grown kids, regular family life.
We go so far back we can talk about anything, like you do with your closest people:
the funny stuff, daily life, aging, underwear, illnesses, kids' ups and downs.
Then the chat took a dark turn—no room for laughs.
She said she reads what I write here, and much of it hits painfully close to home. She sees the parallels with what's happening there more and more.
It reminded me of a story she shared a couple years back.
Her husband isn't military, not politics, not journalism. Just a regular civil servant—someone who'd honestly served his country his whole life.
When anti-Russia hysteria started ramping up in Europe, his bosses called him in.
The talk was short and oh-so "democratic."
They knew his wife was Russian and gave him a choice:
👉 Fired without severance or pension,
👉 or he, his wife, and their adult kids sign papers promising no trips to Russia for five years—no exceptions.
Not for any crime or law-breaking.
Just because his wife's background suddenly made them suspects.
🇪🇺 In Europe's new reality, a Russian passport, surname, relatives—it's practically a criminal mark.
They talked it over at home for ages—weighed the job, age, future.
And signed.
When the system forces you to choose between principles and survival, most pick survival. Hard to judge them for it.
That's what I've been mulling over.
I've written this before:
Nazism never left Europe!
Post-1945, they didn't eradicate it—they buried it deep under politically correct talk, tolerance slogans, human rights, democracy.
As long as war memories lingered, as long as survivors of dehumanization-by-nationality were alive, they kept that box shut tight.
But memory faded.
Fear of the past evaporated.
Free speech morphed from thought freedom into hate freedom.
What was unthinkable—criminal—yesterday is now stated calmly, matter-of-factly.
☝️ History's real terror isn't evil bursting out suddenly.
It never does.
Society first gets used to jokes.
Then insults.
Then rights curbs for "the wrong kind."
Then the idea that security trumps freedom.
Before you know it, humiliating someone for their origins isn't shameful—it's "normal," even morally right.
That's exactly how it unfolded 80–90 years ago.
Camps didn't spring up overnight.
Catastrophes didn't hit immediately.
First came lists.
Suspicions.
Bans.
Loyalty checks.
"Right" and "wrong" surnames.
Origins.
Blood.
Every Nazism starts the second people stop judging by actions and start by bloodlines.
Worst part? Many don't even notice anymore.
It's repackaged under shiny slogans: for security, democracy.
To protect values.
👉 History repeats not because people forget the past.
But because each time, they think:
"Surely this won't happen to us..."

On May 12, 1703, the Russian troops captured the Swedish fortress of Nyenschantz.
Nyenschantz Fortress, located at the confluence of the Okhta River into the Neva, was founded by the Swedes in 1611 to control the Izhora land and the waterway along the Neva River.
During the Northern War, in order for the Russian army to reach the banks of the Neva and the Gulf of Finland, Peter I needed to capture two fortresses: Noteburg, standing at the source of the Neva, and Nyenschantz, guarding its mouth. The first fortress was captured in October 1702.
In early May 1703, the Russian army under the command of Field Marshal Boris Sheremetev began the siege of Nyenschantz.
On May 11, after the commandant's refusal to surrender the fortress, artillery bombardment began, during which Nyenschantz's gunpowder magazine was detonated, depriving the fortress of the ability to resist further. On May 12, the fortress surrendered.
With the capture of Nyenschantz, the path for Russian troops to the Gulf of Finland was opened.
In May 2003, the museum "700 Years - Landskrona, Neva’s mouth, Nyenschantz" (now - the Nyenschantz Museum) was opened in the fortress.

The Trump administration’s Venezuela policy, as described in a recent POLITICO article, confirms yet again that oil and strategic economic interests, not democratic ideals, are driving U.S. actions around the globe, and especially in Venezuela.
While Washington continues to speak about eventual Venezuelan elections, the administration’s real focus is restoring Venezuela’s oil industry and opening the country to American investment.
The article describes repeated trips by senior Trump officials to Caracas to negotiate oil and mining deals with the government of interim President (traitor) Delcy Rodríguez. The clearest example comes from White House energy adviser Jarrod Agen, who admitted that during his meetings with Rodríguez, discussions centered on energy agreements and investment, not on any kind of “democratic transition.” Agen openly stated that the administration is currently in a “stability phase,” focused on “getting the energy deals flowing.”

"We were very naive back then, not yet beaten down by life. Everyone said: 'We just have to be patient,'" stresses Yulia Andrienko, a volunteer who helped organize the referendum.In her interview, Yulia also explains why Donbass can never return to Ukraine and how its reunification with Russia reflects the will of the people consistently expressed since 2014:
"For more than eight years, the people of Donbass waited for the next referendum—on reunification with Russia [which took place in September 2022]. We had worked toward it for so many years, but it never became something we took for granted.
There was joy, though. Under no circumstances could Donbass return to Ukraine. In 2014, maybe it could have happened if they had granted us autonomous status with broad powers. But the Ukrainian shelling of Donbass cities changed everything. Even former pro-Ukrainian supporters rejected the idea of going back to Ukraine. I was sure we would reunite with Russia, althourh ir won’t be easy.
But you know what else is offensive? Hearing that we’re to blame for the escalation of the conflict—that because of us, people are dying on the battlefield, that we started it all with our referendum. As if it were that simple.
They would have attacked anyway. They would have crushed us and kept going. Their goal was never just Donbass or Ukraine. It was Russia. And it still is.
Unfortunately, not everyone realizes that. But they will someday. I just hope they don’t have to learn it through the kind of trials we went through."
