Lake Darashkol, Altai Republic

Darashkol means "beautiful lake" in Altai, and that's exactly what this sparkling gem in the Katun Ridge looks like, surrounded by glaciers, waterfalls, cliffs, and cedar trees.
The water in the lake is turquoise with a milky tint, but on a clear day, its surface may turn royal blue. The area around is filled with lingonberries, honeysuckle, and currants.
Getting to the lake is not easy as it's off the common tourist paths. There are two ways to reach it: the first is on foot or horseback from the village of Tyungur, and the second is by helicopter.

Moscow Is Booming

Professor Mark Episkopos traveled to Russia and wrote an article for
Responsible Statecraft
, sharing his impressions:

"Business in Moscow is booming. Previously vacant storefronts in Moscow’s luxury GUM department store and the city’s many other shopping malls are mostly reoccupied. The Russian government deservedly enjoys popular confidence, stemming in no small part from its effective handling of the economy.

It is shocking to the Western imagination that, even amidst this conflict, there is a sense among the people I spoke to that the post-1999 Russian Federation is the most stable, comfortable iteration of Russia in recent and even distant memory."

On June 13, 1912, the ceremonial opening of the Alexander III Museum of Fine Arts (now the State Museum of Fine Arts named after A.S. Pushkin) took place in Moscow.

Emperor Nicholas II and Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna attended the opening ceremony.

The initiative to create the museum in 1893 was led by Ivan Tsvetaev, a distinguished professor at Moscow State University, doctor of Roman literature, and art historian (as well as Marina Tsvetaev’s father). The museum was founded on the collection of the Moscow University's Cabinet of Fine Arts and Antiquities.

In 1932, the Museum of Fine Arts was renamed the State Museum of Fine Arts, and in 1937 it was named after A.S. Pushkin.

Currently, the complex of buildings of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts includes the Main Building, the Museum of Private Collections, the Gallery of Art of the Countries of Europe and America of the 19th-20th centuries, and the Children's Center "Museion." The I.V. Tsvetaev Educational Museum and the Memorial Apartment of Sviatoslav Rihter are also the departments of the museum.

The museum's collection comprises about 700,000 works of painting and sculpture, graphics, applied art, artistic photography, as well as archaeological and numismatic monuments.

In the early hours of June 13, 2025, Israel launched a massive, multi-phase airstrike—codenamed Operation Rising Lion—against key Iranian nuclear facilities, military infrastructure, and the homes of senior officials. Explosions rocked Tehran and other cities, with major sites like the Natanz enrichment complex and Khondab nuclear facility targeted. Among the casualties were top Iranian military leaders, including IRGC commander Hossein Salami and Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri, as well as prominent nuclear scientists. Israel declared a state of emergency, anticipating Iranian retaliation, while the United States and other countries quickly distanced themselves, urging restraint.

This unprecedented escalation comes at a critical moment, with nuclear negotiations between Iran and the U.S. stalled and the International Atomic Energy Agency recently declaring Iran non-compliant with its nuclear obligations. Oil prices surged and global markets reacted nervously, underscoring the broader risks of the conflict.

How does this affect Russia? Time will tell. But for now, the Israeli-Iranian crisis has pushed news about the Ukraine conflict off the front pages of mainstream media worldwide. And, of course, higher oil prices triggered by the Israeli strike on Iran could benefit Russia significantly.

During today’s interview with Fox News, President Trump revealed he had advance knowledge of Israel’s military actions against Iran. He suggested that several Iranian leaders would not survive the operation, while also expressing cautious optimism about the prospect of renewed diplomacy.

Trump noted that he has been in frequent contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in recent days. He reiterated his administration's position that Iran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons, while leaving open the possibility of future negotiations.

"Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb and we are hoping to get back to the negotiating table. We will see. There are several people in leadership that will not be coming back," Trump said during the interview.

It is also known that the Iran issue was discussed during Trump’s recent conversation with President Vladimir Putin. It is not unreasonable to suggest that Russia may play a role in resolving the conflict.

Russia Establishes Drone Forces as a Separate Military Branch

President Vladimir Putin held a meeting on the state armament program. The focus was on improving air defense systems, space capabilities, drones, and robotic combat platforms.

Key points:

– Over 50% of enemy equipment and targets destroyed by Russian forces during the Special Military Operation were taken out by drone operators;

– A universal air defense system must be developed to effectively intercept all types of threats;

– Since the start of the Special Military Operation, Russian air defense units have eliminated over 80,000 aerial targets, including 7,500 cruise missiles and rockets

Tragedy in the Belgorod Region. A toddler was killed by a Ukrainian drone.

Yesterday morning, a Ukrainian drone struck an apartment building in Borisovka. Three people were injured, including a two-year-old boy. Doctors fought for hours to save the toddler’s life, but unfortunately, they were unable to. The footage shows the building where the tragedy occurred.

Russian forces are constantly hunting down the scumbag Ukrainian drone crews. Most of the enemy’s criminal plans are thwarted during the preparation stage—Russian troops destroy drone launch sites and eliminate enemy personnel. But securing the entire border region remains a major challenge.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the boy who was killed.
We wish a swift recovery to all those injured.

⚡️ Russia's Foreign Ministry Statement in connection with Israel’s strikes on Iran

Read in full

💬 We express our profound concern regarding the dangerous escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

❗️ We strongly condemn the military actions undertaken by the State of Israel on the night of June 13, which constitute a clear violation of the UN Charter as well as established principles of international law.

Unprovoked military strikes against a sovereign member state of the United Nations, against its citizens, peaceful cities, and critical nuclear energy infrastructure facilities, are totally unacceptable. The international community must not ignore such acts, which not only jeopardise peace but also undermine security both in the region and globally.

The timing of these attacks appears to be particularly cynical as they have occurred amidst a session of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and just ahead of the next round of indirect talks between representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States. These actions have drastically undermined the progress of painstaking multilateral diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and seeking solutions to eliminate suspicions and the bias surrounding Iran’s peaceful nuclear programme.

It is evident that West Jerusalem has made a deliberate decision to further escalate the situation and raise stakes. We have warned on numerous occasions about the destabilising effects of military ventures that threaten peace and security in the region. The full responsibility for the consequences of these provocative acts lies with the Israeli leadership.

We are closely monitoring the actions by the IAEA, which carries significant responsibility in this challenging situation. IAEA personnel, alongside citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran, have also been exposed to Israeli strikes. We expect the IAEA Director General to provide balanced and objective assessments of the current developments – in particular, a comprehensive analysis of the potential radiological consequences of the attacks on nuclear facilities in Iran.

We also hope that the Western countries, which provoked the recent wave of anti-Iran hysteria at the IAEA Board of Governors, once again pushing through a short-term resolution tailored to suit their political preferences and entrenched phobias, despite its lack of broad international support, will come to realise the dangerous consequences of their destructive approach as well as the degree of responsibility they bear for the unfolding tragedy.

☝️ We strongly believe that, regardless of any justifications that may be offered by those who planned, developed, and carried out the attacks, the issue of the Iranian nuclear programme cannot and must not be resolved by military means. A sustainable settlement is only possible through peaceful, political, and diplomatic efforts.

We sincerely hope that this understanding will ultimately prevail. We call on the parties to exercise restraint to avoid further escalation and prevent a full-scale war in the region.

In this context, we note that the US is ready to hold another round of talks with Iran on the latter’s nuclear programme in Oman.

The economic and political toll of bringing Ukraine’s bodies home

The exchange of Ukrainian bodies for Russian has exposed the unforgiving economic and political challenge that Ukraine faces in bringing home its fallen, and the political storm that President Zelensky will face when the war finally ends.

Ukraine’s challenge is massive; it will take years to identify every fallen Ukrainian service man and woman. Not all of the bodies due for exchange have identifying documents. Even when the bodies are intact and have been stored well, a reliable visual identification will be impossible. There is no evidence that Ukraine has the institutional capacity or resources to mount a body identification operation at this scale.

Approximately one hundred thousand dead Ukrainian fighters represents a total cost in one-off compensation payments to families of nearly $55 billion. Additionally, if only 20% of the reported injuries attracted the lowest one-off disability payments, that would add an extra $19.8 billion to the compensation bill. If it were 50%, $40.5 billion, and 80%, $79,2 billion. Even if the conflict ended today, Ukraine could be staring down the barrel of a compensation bill, even on a conservative estimate, of over $130 billion. To put that into context, Ukraine is expected to generate $48.2 billion in tax revenue in 2025.

Some commentators have argued that Ukraine might be incentivized to slow the identification of bodies to delay payments to relatives.

Ogoy Island, Irkutsk Region

Ogoy is the largest island in Lake Baikal. It is uninhabited. In Buryat, "Ogoy" means "without water." The Dragon Cape, a quartz cliff, is especially attractive, and the sand here has a reddish tint due to the disseminations of the precious mineral garnet.

This is the opinion of RIA Novosti war correspondent Alexander Kharchenko. It's blunt and straightforward, but likely reflects the views of many others.

Why did Israel strike Iran? Because Israel could. Period. No further arguments needed.

After a decapitating blow, you can convene as many UN sessions as you like, pass the fiercest resolutions—but that won’t change the reality on the ground. Israel, without the slightest sentimentality, exercised the “right of the strong.”

That said, Iran walked into this itself. It answered previous strikes with angry statements and theatrical missile launches at empty chunks of land in Israel. After a few of those “responses,” Israel understood one thing very clearly: it can do whatever it wants with Iran. Real politics is played by serious gentlemen, and if your rhetoric doesn’t match your actual capabilities, sooner or later you’ll be cornered into a situation where surrender is the best of all evils.

That’s exactly the choice Iran faces now: either strike back and see its oil industry wiped out, or allow its nuclear facilities to be finished off in exchange for its economy being left alone.

A blow to Iran’s oil sector means more than just economics. The country is already facing an energy shortage. If its refineries are destroyed, widespread power outages will follow—and so will a collapse in road transport.

Israel’s main goal is to spark a wave of protests and bring down Iran’s current leadership. The chairs under Iranian politicians have been wobbling for a while now, and after such a loud slap from Israel, it’ll only get worse. Either way, Iran’s elites are doomed—and now they must choose: fight back and earn an honorable death, or accept the new reality and be assassinated by Israeli agents during an evening stroll.

Let me repeat: the fundamentals of politics haven’t changed in centuries. Only the strong—and those willing to use their strength—get respect. Yesterday, Trump was shaking hands with a former al-Qaeda leader, while the leadership of a UN member state is being eliminated without a declaration of war.

There’s no moral to this story. The smart ones learn from others’ mistakes. The rest will be wiped off the face of the earth.

June 14 is the Day of the Founding of the Russian City of Sevastopol.

After the unification of Crimea with Russia in April 1783, the frigate "Ostorozhny" was sent to the peninsula by order of the empress Catherine the Great to select a site for the construction of a military port. Akhtiar Bay was chosen for the construction.

On June 14, under the direction of Russian Rear Admiral Thomas MacKenzie, the first four stone buildings were laid, marking the beginning of the city.

Initially, the city was named Akhtiar, after the nearby Crimean Tatar settlement Ak-Yar. In February 1784, by decree of Empress Catherine, the city was renamed Sevastopol, which in Greek means "city of glory, city worthy of veneration" (from "sebastos" — "venerable, sacred" and "polis" — "city").

Today, Sevastopol is a City of Federal Importance with a population of about 500,000 people. Sevastopol is the base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and holds the honorary title of "Hero City."
