It hunts at night by pretending to be a reflection of the moon in the water. The luminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri, which live in a special light organ near the eyes, help it do this.

Predators among caterpillars are extremely rare - no more than one percent. This one, of the genus Eupithecia, chews leaves just like its relatives - but it does not eat them, but carves an opening in the leaf for itself. Once hidden, it hunts flies and flies with ease.
