A robotic dog for Mars exploration

At the December meeting NASA experts announced the adapted for Martian conditions robot ‘dog’ designed by Boston Dynamics.

The robot, dubbed Au-Spot, would also be roughly 12 times lighter than current rovers and would be capable of traveling much faster, reaching normal walking speeds of 3 mph (5 km/h) rolling along the Martian surface. To put that into perspective, traditional rovers reach only 0.09 mph (0.14 km/h).

Artificial intelligence software and networked sensors would make it possible to scan the planet's environment in detail.
