The U.S. has created a concept of rocket fuel for the return of astronauts from Mars to Earth
To implement this project successfully, some kinds of microbes have to be delivered to Mars.
The first are algae capable of producing carbon dioxide on the Red Planet. They are also able to generate glucose with the help of the Sun's rays. The latter are E. coli, which convert sugar into rocket fuel.
Plans are for spacecraft launched to Mars to run on liquid oxygen and methane (oxygen can easily be obtained from carbon dioxide on Mars).
