Have you ever thought about the question “How do flies breathe?”. Here we are with some answers… Flies breathe in a way that is very different from us. They don’t have a central place to gather oxygen (lungs) and a transport system (heart, blood) to deliver the oxygen to all of the cells of our body.

Do you see a tiny yellow hole on the side of the fly's thorax? This is an anterior spiracle, which is the opening of a long tube called a tracheae. Tracheae is a long, air-filled, branching tube that creates the respiratory system to deliver the oxygen directly to each cell in the flies’ body and collect carbon dioxide to be expelled. The movement of air through the tracheal system of flies relies on diffusion, which occurs best over small distances. That’s why they cannot get very large or huge like you see them in the movies.
