The wonders of hydrostatics

In a resting fluid, there is always a pressure force called hydrostatic pressure. The fluid exerts a force on the bottom and walls of the vessel.

In this case, the water squeezed out the carbon dioxide and filled the empty space. This equalized the pressure in the bottle and the pool, so the cola didn't leak out.
