He survived several assassination attempts but was finally killed by members of the Iron Guard with German assistance. The following year, Romania, which had previously been neutral, joined sides with the Axis for the duration of WWII.

American paratroopers of the 504th PIR bound for Sicily, July 1943. On 11 July 1943, paratroopers of the 504th parachute infantry regiment (along with some other parachute battalions also from the 82nd Airborne) were traveling in 144 C-47 transport planes, to be dropped over Sicily. They passed over Allied lines shortly after a German air raid, and were mistakenly fired upon by American ground and naval forces. 23 planes were shot down and 37 damaged, resulting in 318 casualties, with 60 airmen and 81 paratroopers killed.
