On 17 February 1864, the Confederate submarine CSS Hunley became the first combat submarine to sink a warship (the USS Housatonic). However, following her successful attack, she was lost along with her crew before she could return to base in Charleston, SC.
The lost sub was relocated in 1995 and raised in 2000. After some research and examination, the remains of the 8 men aboard were laid to rest. The sub itself is now on display at a Charleston museum.
