Piles of shoes, clothes and glasses taken from prisoners at the Nazi death camp complex Auschwitz-Birkenau. On 27 January 1945 the camp was liberated. During its operation, over 1.1 million people were killed in this one camp, about 1 million of whom were Jews.

28 January 1547: King Henry VIII of England died and was succeeded by his son, Edward VI. Edward became king at age 10, but died of tuberculosis at only age 16. He was followed by his half-sister, Mary.
