In eastern Germany, a 19th-century factory is being sold for 1 euro

The vast factory area, which authorities have placed up for auction, is located in Saxony-Anhalt, north of Magdeburg. Iron ore deposits were discovered in Tangerhütte in 1842, leading to the establishment of an enterprise. Within a short period, it transformed an ordinary agricultural village into a global industrial center.

More than 1,500 residents of Tangermünde produced high-demand products during the late 19th-century German economic boom, including streetlights, spiral staircases, bathtubs, and even entire tea pavilions. Products were also exported to countries such as Japan, Egypt, and Argentina, and the factory quickly gained international recognition. However, following the collapse of the GDR, this industrial legend became an abandoned ruin.

The city authorities are eager to dispose of the property, with a minimum price of only 1 euro. Applications must be submitted by September 30, and the new owner will face significant work. According to the terms, the buyer must immediately take measures to strengthen the facades, which are recognized as architectural monuments, and ensure their long-term preservation.

Concerns are growing that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is denying promotions and pushing out officers who raise questions about his directives

Two former officers told MS NOW they were pushed out of their jobs and forced to retire early after questioning command decisions. The officers spoke on the condition of anonymity due to concerns that the Pentagon would retaliate against them and try to strip their retirement pensions.  

Their removals seem to mark a departure from an American military tradition of officers delivering clear-eyed assessments so Pentagon leaders can make the most informed decisions.
