Northern vs Southern Italians

The historical difference in the appearance of North and South Italians is the result of distinct waves of migrations and subsequent racial mixing across the Italian peninsula, which has long been racially diversified through history. Northern Italy received substantial infusions of people who had Nordic characteristics, most notably the powerful Germanic Lombards who established a kingdom in the 6th century AD, leading to a typically lighter population average in the North.

Conversely, Southern Italy and Sicily were heavily influenced by foreign populations of various races, White or otherwise, migrating across the Mediterranean, including Greeks and Etruscans, as well as subsequent non-White Levantine, North African, and Ethiopian slaves, as well as Muslim (Moorish/Saracen) invasions launched from Tunisia. It was also the region most affected by the Edict of Caracalla, which granted citizenship to all foreign freemen in the Empire.
