El Nino is the warm phase of a larger climate cycle called Enso, and occurs when the trade winds over the equatorial Pacific weaken and warm ocean surface waters that would normally move westward—Asia and Australia—return to the east, off the coast of South America.
The "Previous Super El Nino" was a very strong El Nino that occurred about 149 years ago. The 1878-1877 El Niño is one of the strongest recorded El Niños in modern history, reconstructed from coral and tree-ring data, which many climatologists believe was a perfect "Super El Niño".
