Dear Learners,

Warm greetings to all of you!!

Based on feedback from learners and performance seen in Quiz 2 as well as interactions during the live sessions, we are making the following changes to the Statistics-1 course being run currently.

Weeks 11 and 12:
1. We are moving the topic "Continuous random variable" supposed to be dealt with in Weeks 11 and 12, as per the original syllabus plan to Statistics 2 course in Semester 2.
2. We have decided to re-run the Week 6 and Week 7 content in place of Week 11 and Week 12, respectively. We will give more questions/assignments to train you and strengthen your learning of
probability.

Also, try to learn the basic concepts of probability first and if you are not able to solve big problems directly related to probability, do not worry much for now. You can still learn the contents put out in Week 8 and 9 and do well in the course and manage. Problems in Weeks 8- 10 dealing with topics like random variables, pmf, cdf etc can be solved directly even if all ideas in Weeks 6-7 are not 100% clear. Hence, do not get anxious if concepts of probability are not too clear. You can take your time and keep solving and it will come to you gradually.

Having passed the qualifier and being amongst the 8163 of the 30000 who initially registered, do not lose heart!

Learn and practice with us,  we all are with you in this journey.

Thank you!!

Warm regards,
IITM Online degree team.

⚠️This is not a promotion, but rather a suggestion

Dear IITians, we all know that sometimes IITM server don't work for us properly and we have been advised by IITM to use VPN during these situations.

But please DO NOT use any random VPN service. We are data science students and we know how valuable data can be. 99% VPNs out there log user activities, which is concerning.

So I suggest using proton VPN to access IITM site when needed. It doesn't log user activities. You can do your own research on Proton VPN if you want.

And you get access to 3 free servers for lifetime.

⚠️ Don't use free VPNs which log your activity. Your data is more precious than you think

⚠ ️IMPORTANT ⚠️

Dear learners,

Hope the courses you have registered for are all going fine. Quiz 3 scores
will be released soon.

Here are some important changes in the program policies. Please do read
them carefully and make note of the same:

1. Change in the format of the final exam:

About the final exams, originally scheduled for March 13/14 as 2sessions
per day (each exam of duration 3hrs), many had expressed concerns about
appearing for exams on Saturday.

Taking this feedback into account, IITM Senate has approved the following
proposal for exams:

The final exam of 3hrs duration for each subject is being replaced by an
exam of 1.5hrs duration.

The exams for 2 subjects (English-1 and Maths-1) will be held in the
Forenoon of March 14, Sunday (9 am-12noon) and exams for the other 2
subjects (CT and Statistics-1) will be held in the Afternoon session of
March 14, Sunday (2 pm to 5 pm).

Hence Exams for all 4 subjects will be completed in a single day, March
14, in 2 sessions. There will be NO exam on March 13, Saturday.

Eligibility to write the end-term exam based on the average weekly
assignment score remains the same.

2. Change in weightage of Quiz and FInal exam scores:

Originally, it was proposed that the best 2 out of 3 quizzes would
contribute to 40% of the final score and the Final exam would contribute to
60% of the final score.

It is now changed to Total course score (T) = 50% of best 2 out of 3 quiz
scores (out of 100) + 50% of End term exam score (E)

For each subject, in whichever quizzes you have the highest scores, those
scores will be considered for this subject for calculation of Total course
score T.

Hence the quizzes from which the scores are considered can be different
for each subject too. (Many learners had this doubt - hope this is clear
now).

3. Criteria for passing the course:

A learner is deemed to have passed a course if Total Course Score (T) >=
50/100

The earlier condition of requiring to score more than 40/100 in End term
exam is removed. These criteria are the same for all learners participating
in the course.

4. Change in the calculation of course grade:

An absolute grading system will be followed as shown where the course
grade is dependent on the End term exam score E being >= 40 is removed. The
final course grade only depends on the Total course score of T.

IMPORTANT:

1. For all of you - the primary condition of attending one quiz at least
is automatically satisfied by having attended the qualifier exam (Quiz 1).

2. We will be considering the best 6 weekly assignment scores to calculate
the average, which if >= 40/100 will make you eligible to appear for the
End term exam of the course. This includes the 3 weekly online graded
assignments given during the qualifier month and those given between weeks
5 to 12 in the Jan/Feb 2021 term. If your average score is lesser than 40,
please do submit the upcoming assignments to better your score and qualify.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Warm Regards,

IITM - Online Degree.
