What collocations can you think of with PRESSURE?
What collocations can you think of with PRESSURE?
Usually when we are stuck at 7.0 or 7.5 for writing, the task 1 score might be the one holding us back. So it is important to learn about the Task Achievement (TA) in more detail! Nurmuhammad Ravshanov (W8.0) and myself (W8.0) are doing just that- teaching our students how to improve the score in those areas overlooked before. We will be launching another session in March, so maybe see you then!

The SUPER BOWL
Today is the biggest night of the year in NFL (American Football). Despite being popular just mostly in North America, the Super Bowl averages more than 100 million viewers on single night. That, of course, may not be as big as the viewership figures of a Champions League final in a European football (which is about 400 mln views), but it is like comparing apples to oranges. They are two different things.
Since I don’t follow NFL, I usually watch the Super Bowl commercials afterwards (on Youtube). Trust me, these ads tend to be the most creative, and if you are in a related field, you can learn a lot. Even if you are not, I am sure you can find your new favorite commercial to talk about in the IELTS speaking test. (Just type Super Bowl ads on a search bar on YouTube and enjoy)
Today I have one more reason to watch the Super Bowl, or just the half-time show as it will be featuring Eminem alongside other big names like Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar. The half-time show is predicted to kick off at around 6:00am Tashkent time, and will last only about 15 minutes or so.

#WritingMarathon
Compare these two pieces of writing:
V1: Curators of museums and art galleries archive every artefact and painting discovered so they may later exhibit these works of art and historical relics to museum-enthusiasts and historians in exhibition halls.
V2: Museum curators often store the artefacts they find in an archive, so that they can later be presented to the public in exhibitions.
Which version do you think is stronger in terms of use of lexical resources?

#WordOftheDay
The same word can carry different levels/meanings. Candidates who understand those nuances usually score higher on the test.
Now, let’s go over the word SPECIFIC.
According to the OALD, the word has three different meanings:
1. Specific [A2] - particular
The money was collected for a specific purpose.
2. Specific [B1]- detailed and exact; PRECISE
He wasn’t specific about his plans
3. Specific (to something) [formal] - existing in only one place, or limited to one thing; PECULIAR
These heart issues are specific to women
As you can see, if you can show the examiner you are aware of these subtleties of English language, you are likely to get a much better score than someone who memorizes and uses “advanced” words forcefully.

#SPEAKING BAND 5.0 EXPLAINED:
Test takers at this band can typically keep speaking, but there may be frequent repetition, self-correction, slow speech, or hesitation to search for words or grammar. Speaking is not always clear and well linked, often with an overuse of certain linking words or phrases. Although they can talk fluently on simple topics, there may be problems with less familiar topics and language. They have enough vocabulary to talk about familiar and unfamiliar topics, but the range is limited, there are frequent errors, and there may be limited ability to paraphrase. They can use simple grammar structures, and these are quite accurate. There are not many complex grammar structures, these usually have errors, and may be difficult to understand. Pronunciation can be clear and effective, but there are often problems, and these may make test takers difficult to understand at times.
How to improve your score?
Think of topics you don’t know about, including some abstract ones, and learn as many English words related to them as you can. Then talk about one of the topics using as many of the words as you can. When you speak, try to group words that go together in ‘chunks’ of meaning. This will make your delivery sound better. Notice words you find hard to pronounce and repeat these until you get them right. After you have finished speaking, try again, but this time talking longer and saying things in a different way.
If you can, find other English speakers you can speak with. Talk about the topics you have worked on, ask each other questions, and have a discussion. While discussing, if you don’t know words or grammar structures for something, try to say it in a different way using different words. Afterwards, note the words and structures you don’t know so you know what to learn next.
Listen to English programmes to help improve your pronunciation.

🔥 IELTS 7.5 ball olish boshida imkonsizdek ko'ringan edi
Firdavs Oqilov:
“IELTS kursida o'qishni boshlaganimda boshida ancha qiynaldim. Ayniqsa, so’z boyligim ko'p muammo bo'lardi. Rostini aytsam, boshida men uchun hattoki 7.0 ball ham fantastikadek ko'rinardi. Ammo, ustozim Temurbek Akbaraliev aslida hammasi osonligini o'rgatdi.
Boshida men uchun imkonsizdek ko'ringan ballni o'zim qo’lga kiritganimdan keyin va guruhdoshim 8.5 ball olganidan keyin tushundimki, maqsadni katta qo'yaverish kerak ekan. Qo’rqmaslik kerak va eng muhimi qiynalgan paytda tashlab ketmaslik kerak ekan.”
