#points 2&3

2. Original Material

While it’s ok, and sometimes even encouraged, to use parts of the question or passage in your answer, don’t take entire sentences or sections from it. Even if you copy them in an acceptable manner, you are tampering with the ever-important word count. Usually the word count is either 150 or 250 words. You are expected to write AT LEAST that many words, but if you write more than 50 extra words (200 or 300, respectively) then you will lose points for lack of efficiency. When you copy sentences, your examiner will not count them as part of your word count, which means you could accidentally slip under the limit and lose points.

3. Time Management

For a 250 word essay, you should spend about 40 minutes on it (you have one hour to complete all of the writing section, so you will need 20 minutes for Task 1). While you will be feeling rushed to make sure you finish, it’s better to take 5-10 minutes to think about your response and map it out. That still leaves you with 30 minutes to write 250 words; just to give you an example, if you combine “A Brief Introduction” and “Tip #1” from this post, that’s 290 words. What I’m trying to say is it’s not that many words and the examiner is not interested in how much you can write in 40 minutes. The examiner is interested in how well you write, so planning ahead is, truly, one of the most important things you can do.

Pig...(noun)...It is an animal

pick at = eat a little
snack on = eat a little more
Pig out = eat a lot of food all at once

4. Write The Essay First

As I briefly mentioned above, you have one hour to complete Tasks 1 and 2 of the writing section and it’s up to you how much time you spend on each task. Almost anyone will tell you to write the essay first. It carries more weight than Task 1 and this will ensure that you finish it on time. Still, try to keep the time devoted to the essay to 40 minutes or less.

This five-star course on Quality Paragraph and Essay Writing can provide you with a comprehensive refresher on how to construct the perfect essay.

5. Coherence And Cohesion Tip

This is one of the four grading criteria. You will be judged on how well you can string together thoughts, sentences and paragraphs. The most difficult thing for most people to accomplish is stringing together paragraphs. There’s actually a rather easy way to do this, assuming the paragraphs you are stringing together are coherent.

Example: Let’s say you are writing about the advantages and disadvantages of using coal as a source of energy. In your first paragraph, you might discuss the advantages, while in the second you discuss the disadvantages. How do you make the jump between paragraphs so that the reader can follow your train of thought? It all happens in the last sentence of your first paragraph; you just need to hint at what comes next: “While coal provides a relatively safe and reliable source of energy, it does not come without a number of detrimental side effects.” Now the reader is primed to read about coal’s “detrimental side effects.” And remember, cohesion accounts for 25% of your grade, so practice a few of these on your own.

👆👆👆#phrasal verb

Pick at < snack on < pig out < polish off
این توالی نشون میده که زمانیکه فرد pick at انجام میده، مقدار بسیار کمی از غذاش رو میل میکنه (مثلا به این دلیل که گرسنه یا بیماره) اما زمانیکه شخصی polish off انجام میده، یعنی تمام غذای داخل بشقابش رو (در یک چشم بر هم زدن) میل میکنه و اثری از غذا باقی نمیمونه.

#Mistakes with verbs
MAY 4, 2016

Here are some common mistakes in the use of verbs.

1)Incorrect: He asked that what I was doing.
Correct: He asked what I was doing.

If a noun-clause begins with a wh-word, ‘that’ is omitted.

2)Incorrect: She asked had we finished our meals.
Correct: She asked if we had finished our meals.

We use ‘if’ or ‘whether’ to introduce an indirect ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ question.

3)Incorrect: Rahul said can he go home.
Correct: Rahul asked if he could go home.

When the reporting verb is in the past tense, the verb in the reported speech should also be in the past tense.

4)Incorrect: He does not care for his father’s words.
Correct: He pays no attention to his father’s words.

To care for is to look after or to provide for the needs of someone.
To pay attention to someone is to listen to what they are saying.

5)Incorrect: James does not care for money.
Correct: James does not take care of his money.

6)Incorrect: He said that he paid the fee last week.
Correct: He said that he had paid the fee the previous week.

This is an example of the common failure to use the past perfect tense in the reported speech when the verb in the main clause is in the past tense.

7)Incorrect: This has been going on since a long time.
Correct: This has been going on for a long time.

Use ‘for’ to indicate duration.

IELTS Speaking Test: Key Facts

Duration: Between 11 and 14 minutes.
Participants: Candidates interviewed individually. The test is recorded.
Format: The test consists of three parts.

@ieltslearner
Part 1 (Interview)

Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking test lasts between 4 and 5 minutes. The examiner will ask some simple 'getting-to-know-you' questions which will help the examiner find out a little about you and help put you at ease. These will be general questions such as about your family, your studies, where you come from or what your interests are.

Example Questions

Q: Where are you from?
Q: Why are you studying English?
Q: Have you visited any English speaking countries?
Q: Do you play any sports?
Tips!

Giving full, relevant answers to the examiner's questions will help get the interview off to a good start.

1) Avoid giving short, uncommunicative replies.
Q: Where are you from?
A: I'm from Hoorn in the Netherlands. (Don't stop there!) It's about 35 kilometers north of Amsterdam. It's a modern city but with a lot of history and a lovely place to live.

2) Avoid short, 'yes', 'no' answers to closed questions. (These are questions beginning 'Have you ...', 'Do you ...', 'Is it ...' etc which can be answered simply with a yes or no answer).
Q: Have you visited any English speaking countries?
A: Yes. (Don't stop there!) I went to England last year and spent two weeks seeing the sights. A couple of years ago I went to New York with my parents and had a great time.
Q: Do you play any sports?
A: No. (Don't stop there!) I'm not really interested in playing sports. I like watching sport on TV and I really enjoyed keeping up with the Olympics recently.

3) Offer examples to help you explain a statement.
Q: Why are you preparing for the IELTS exam?
A: Because I need it for my studies. (Don't stop there!) I've been offered a place at a university in England to study on an MBA but I need to show my level of English is good enough.

#Speaking part2
@ieltslearner

Part 2 (Long Turn)

Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test lasts between 3 and 4 minutes (including 1 minute preparation time). The examiner gives you a task card and you have to speak about the subject without interruption for between 1 and 2 minutes.

Example Task

Example 1) Describe a place you have visited that you have fond memories of.

You should say:

where this was
why you went there
what you did there
and what it was about the place that makes it so memorable.

Example 2) Describe your favourite personal possession.

You should say:

what this possession is
when you first got it
when you use it
and why it's so important to you.

Tips!

1. Use your 1 minute preparation time wisely and make notes of the points you'd like to make.

2. The question will help you with the structure of your talk. The introduction can include the item itself and maybe a brief description. The main body of your talk could describe the situation when you acquired the object and go on to explain when you use it. You can then end with an explanation of why the object is so important.

3. Try to avoid giving a very dry, unimaginative introduction such as 'The object I'm going to describe is ....'. Get your talk off to a memorable start with something on the lines of: 'If I was about to lose everything and could only save one thing it would be my ...', or 'I've got several things that mean a lot to me but the one that really stands out is my ...'

4. If you're concerned about not having enough to talk about for 1 to 2 minutes or running out of time before you've finished, the answer is to practise as often as possible. Time yourself and ask a friend for feedback

#speaking3

Part 3: (Two-Way Discussion)

In Part 3 of the test, which lasts between 3 to 4 minutes, the examiner will ask you questions linked to the topic in Part 2.

Example Questions (Based on example topics in Part 2 above)

Q: It is sometimes argued that local cultures are being destroyed by tourism. Why do think people might feel this?
Q: What benefits do people get from travelling to other countries?
Q: Do you think people are becoming too materialistic?
Q: To what extent are people's buying habits affected by advertising?

Tips!

1. If you need time to collect your thoughts use expressions (sparingly) like: 'That's a good question.', 'Well, let me think ...'.

2. Don't forget to avoid short, 'yes', 'no' answers. Try to offer examples to back up a statement.

3. Help make your contributions memorable. Try explaining a point using a short, personal anecdote.

4. If the examiner asks a question that you don't understand, take control of the situation with questions such as those that appear below. Responding like this will show evidence of your communication skills.

A) If the examiner uses a word or phrase that you don't understand, say something like:
"Sorry but could you explain what you mean by ........" or
"I haven't come across that word/expression before. Could you explain what you mean?"

B) If you simply didn't hear something that was asked, respond with:
"Excuse me, I didn't quite catch that. Could you say that again?"
"I'm sorry, but would you mind repeating that?"

C) If you want to make sure you've understood what the examiner has asked you could say:
"Do you mean ........"
"When you say ........, do you mean/are you asking ........?
