Describe an important decision/ choice that you made in your life.

You should say:

What the decision was
When you took the decision
What the results of the decision was and whether it was a good choice.

and explain why it was an important decision or choice for you.

Follow-up Questions:

How parents' decisions affect their children's life?
What important things do you consider while taking a big decision

@ieltslearner

I've made lots of decisions in my life and frankly I have taken those decisions sometimes all alone and sometimes discussing with my parents and others. The particular decision that seems very important to me was the time when I decided to major in Literature rather than major in Engineering. My mother wanted me to get admitted in the Eng. University and do my graduation majoring Engineering while my fascination was studying in Literature. I made this decision when I was 18 years of old, just after finishing my 12th grade. My father did not force me to do anything; instead, he told me to do what I thought was best for me. My relatives thought that I was a fool and too immature to make a big decision for myself.

But after considering several issues and perspective I decided to get myself admitted to a university that offers graduation in literature. I'm happy that I made this decision. I'm yet to finish my graduation but throughout the last 3 years I have enjoyed studying literature and I am doing quite well academically.

Making the decision/ choice was not easy and I had to go through a hard time as I remember. I had to fight a lot with my inner self and then convince my mother. There were always risks of picking the option I prefer my parents would have complained if I hadn’t made a promising result. I still remember the dubious feelings I had that time. Sometimes it seemed to me that I should abandon my passion and yield to my parents' decision and then again I strongly felt for my own choice and passion. Since I made my own choice at that time, a strong urge and force worked on me that I have to do really good and I am happy that I took my decision and doing very good so far.

Mistakes in IELTS – two categories

There are different types of mistakes in IELTS. For me, they fall into two basic categories

1. Language problems
The first is mistakes made through lack of language ability: in a way these are unavoidable. Only a highly educated native speaker can expect to get 9.0 – every IELTS candidate will make mistakes because of their language level. The only way to stop these is to learn better English skills.

2. Exam skill problems – how you think

This common mistake is quite different. They are avoidable mistakes. You knew the answer but you got it wrong. Aaaaaagh! It’s not a problem with language here, it is a problem with thinking. A huge amount of these problems are caused by just one thing: not reading and understanding the question

❄️Read, understand and answer the question
The solution is simple in a way: read, understand and answer the question. But simple things can still need a little explanation. All these 3 stages need to be focussed on. To get this right you need to practise your exam skills. Here is what I suggest:

Step one: read (or listen to) the question
This means spending time, do not hurry onto the writing/reading/listening part. The more time you spend reading, the more efficiently, you will write/read/listen. In the end, you will save time this way not waste it.
Don’t make the mistake of always practising in a limited time. Build your skills. Start writing essays in one hour. Then when you can write a good essay in one hour, write one in 55 minutes. You know you are ready for the test when you can write a good essay in 40 minutes. Exactly the same idea works in reading too. Don’t just practice reading in one hour – if you do, then you’ll never improve.
Do not focus on key words. Read and listen to the whole question. To get the answer you need to understand the whole question and not just words in it.

Step two: understand the question
I thank Nadjwa – one of my students – for this. I used to tell my students to read the question. Then she explained to me that she needed to understand it too. She was right and I was wrong. It is not sufficient just to read, you also need to understand. Why? If you don’t understand, you won’t answer the task. If you don’t answer the task, you don’t get the marks.
Again, don’t worry if this takes a little time. This is not wasted time. You only waste time if you get questions wrong. This way you’ll get questions right.

Step three: answer the question

This part should be the simple part if you have read/listened and understood – IF your English is at the right level. Still, mistakes do happen here. Here is just one handy hint. Before you write the question in, read the question again. Make sure your answer is an answer to the question. Some things you can check for include:

💥 words like always and never – they can change the meaning of a question
💥 is your answer grammatically right?
💥 have you written the correct number of words?

What is Chāhār Shanbé Sooree?

Chāhār Shanbé Sooree is the celebration that takes place the Tuesday night before Persian New Year (the first day of Spring!). Literally translated, it means either Wednesday Soiree, or Red Wednesday, because the celebrations go on through the night into Wednesday morning!

At its core, the purpose of the party is to say goodbye to the previous year WITH A BANG, and welcome the new year with a clean and fresh start. You can celebrate this exciting holiday no matter where you are in the world.

Here’s a complete guide on how to do it:

Build a fire (or 3)

2٫ Give the fire the bad, take from the fire the good:

Let go of the past:

Cleanse, clense, cleanse:

A person I admire is my “Mother” because she is a fighter. You may ask why? To start, my mom got pregnant with me at the age of 18 and she did not have the support of my grandparents. Her own parents wanted to kick her out the house when they found out. She convinced them to let her stay, but she could not ask them for any help when raising the baby. Knowing all this my mom still decided to have the baby.

Besides not having the support of her parents, she also did not receive any help from my father. Although my father cared about me, he never gave my mom money or clothes to help her maintain me as a baby. She had to provide for me on her own. Going to school and working was killing her, but she wanted me to have a good life so she did anything that she could. My mom got pregnant again two years later, with the same man. The only thing was this time - it was worse. He left her life completely and her dad was sick. Therefore, he could no longer work. Now, not only did she have to provide for her two babies, but also for her parents. She was overwhelmed with everything happening; she didn't know what to do.

Finally, she decided to attend college and become a teacher for she can support the family she was now in charge of. It was not an easy thing to do. After she finished college it took her a while to find a job. It is not easy to find a job in Nicaragua. However, my mom never quit, no matter how hard things got for her she fought through it. To provide for her kids and parents.

I can still remember lots of things I did in my childhood and things that happened when I was a child. Sometimes those memories seem so lucid that it seems those events occurred only a few days back. Anyway, a childhood memory I can still remember so clearly is the first time when I saw the death.

I was a then a kid of class three or four and one day I heard that there had been an accident near our home. My mother asked me whether I want to go or not! I agreed to go there as I thought it would be an exciting experience. I went with my mother and speculated lots of thing about the accident but when I watched 10 dead people were kept lying on the ground and among them, there were 2 kids too, I was devastated about the dead scene. I started feeling sick and started vomiting there. This was in fact too much for me to digest. I had no idea how devastating the accidents could be. The dead people, especially the dead bodies of two kids stroke me really hard. I found that a lot of people were looking at the scene and many of them were discussing how this terrible accident might have happened. My mother took me back to our home and I was ill for about two days. I asked my mum and dad a lot of question after I recovered from the initial shock. Some of them were quite hard for me to understand and yet something inside me had changed me and that change was permanent.

This memory was important to me because it helped me to think about the life in a different way. I could realise then what the dead is and how fragile our lives are. This memory helped me to grow faster and opened my eyes of vision.
