IDEAS: CLARITY URGENTLY NEEDED OVER NEXT STEPS FOLLOWING APPOINTMENT OF CARETAKER PRIME MINISTER

IDEAS welcomed the government’s announcement of the Perkukuh Pelaburan Rakyat (PERKUKUH) programme on August 12th but calls for more disclosure on what the programme entails. PERKUKUH is designed to reform the mandate and roles of Malaysia’s government-linked investment companies (GLICs) in order to align them with the national agenda and to support the country’s economic recovery plan.

We recognised the long contribution of GLICs towards Malaysia’s economic development. However, there are rooms for us to monitor and to review for greater impact from the GLICs.

IDEAS congratulated and welcomed Malaysia’s first ever Pre-Budget Statement (PBS) released by the Ministry of Finance on 31st August 2021. PBS is one of the eight key documents, recommended by International Budget Partnership to ensure transparency of government’s budgeting and expenditure.

We hope this will be a turning point for Malaysia to score higher points for budget transparency alongside its ASEAN partners and improving government’s transparency and accountability.

IDEAS Publishes Policy Brief Looking into the Programmes for Students with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

IDEAS publishes a policy brief entitled, ‘Falling Through the Cracks: Identifying Children with Learning Difficulties in Malaysian Schools’, identified shortcomings in the several remedial and learning support programmes currently in place for students with special educational needs (SEN), including issues of limited curriculums, lack of consistency in implementation, as well as lack of clear criteria and timeline for hospital referrals.
