A Task 2 sample question: Some people believe that children are given too much free time. They feel that this time should be used to do more school work. To what extent do you agree?

A sample response with examiner's comments:
To a large extent, I believe that children are given too much free time. Free time, in my opinion, refers to time not spent under the direct supervision of a parent, teacher or a person entrusted with the responsibility of bringing up the child. Such time is often spent on several things such as watching television, playing with friends, going to parties, doing homework, playing games on their own among others.
Among all of the above, a child could either be influenced by his or her peer group especially when left without attention or be influenced by what he or she watches on TV most of which are those not meant to be viewed by the child’s age group.
In my opinion, most of the formative years of a child should be spent doing school Work, engaging in recreational activities would develop the child emotionally and mentally. I believe this strongly because at a young age, a child is quick to grasp most of what is seen or heard.
Examiner's comments: The writing has clear organisation and some good use of linking words. The range of vocabulary and sentence structures is very good with a high level of control.
However, the answer is unfinished and this means that some of the ideas would need more support. The opening sentence is copied and the whole answer is underlength.

A model response prepared by an examiner:
The issue of whether children are given too much free time , in my view, is not about the amount of free time they have, but about whether this time can be spent on socially productive activities.
Clearly, giving students an excessive amount of spare time after school may cause a series of problems. Young students are at the best stage in their lives to acquire knowledge and skills. If this precious period is occupied with idle activities, they will have to do much more to compete with their peers when they become adults.
What can be more disturbing is the possible increase in children’s misbehavior and even offences after school. Some teenagers may linger on the streets instead of staying with their parents or guardians, which makes it very likely for them to be involved in criminal acts.
Not only does schoolwork include writing essays and research papers, it may also offer a variety of social activities, such as group discussions or preparation for team presentations, which hones children’s cooperative skills. So it seems children should indeed spend more time on their schoolwork.
Despite all these considerations, I believe that students should be given enough freedom in deciding how to use their spare time for the fundamental reason that the skill of managing their time as important as reading books or doing exercises. Specifically, providing students with the right to choose what they do after class will develop their sense of responsibility and build their confidence which are the root of any success.
So I think students should be given proper guidance about how to use their free time, although this free time not necessarily has to be spent on schoolwork.

Children who grow up in needy families are better prepared to deal with problems in their adult life than children who are brought up by wealthy parents. Do you agree or disagree?
***********************************************************************
Many needy parents are concerned that poverty will hold their children back in their academic and professional development. However I believe children raised in poor families may actually have some advantages that rich parents cannot give their offspring.
Children raised in poor households have stronger self-control as they have learned from their childhood experience that things do not come easily. They have to save up their allowance for expensive things they want to buy so when they become adults, they will be more patient and can wait for months or even years before their needs are satisfied. It seems to me this strong self-discipline will be a significant element of success.
Also, to these kids, the ability to make good use of limited resources is a necessity. They do no waste money on parties or buying clothes they only wear once or twice a year so they become better at managing resources on important quality for achieving success when they become adults.
Further, children who grow up in poor families are generally more independent and more hardworking than children brought up by rich parents. Due to their parents’ limited incomes, these children have learned at a very young age to depend on themselves in making toys, cleaning up their rooms and cooking meals for themselves. These experiences make them better at handling difficult situations and solving problems by themselves, which will be very helpful for career success in the future.
To conclude, growing up in poor families may be in fact an advantage in terms of children‘s development because it helps to cultivate some qualities that adult success requires.

Nowadays cheap air travel is increasingly popular in the world. To what extend do you think its advantages outweigh its disadvantages.
********************************** There was a time when air travel was only for the wealthy people and out of reach for the majority of citizens. Technological development has made traveling by air affordable. Low-cost flights are available in many countries. I believe this is, overall, a positive development.
The most obvious advantage of low-priced flights is their affordability. Nowadays, it is possible to get discounts when buying an airline ticket. This change can certainly give more people affordable access to air travel and help them to save money. At the same time, it can increase the efficiency of traveling, either for business or for pleasure. Moreover, cheap air travel also contributes to the growth of tourism as it provides more tourists with the chance to travel to more distant destinations in less time. As a result, it is likely to stimulate the economy by providing more job opportunities, which is beneficial to the development of a city's economy.
On the other hand, some individuals think otherwise. Some fear that air service companies might lower the safety standards in order to control their cost while others think fuel consumption of an airplane is higher than any other means of transportation, and because of this, taking flight tends to contaminate the atmosphere more seriously than automobiles does. However, air travel is not more damaging to the environment than car rides because the number of passengers that a plane can carry is far more than cars or other means of transportation.
In conclusion, cheap air travel not only can offer us affordable flights but also can give us greater convenience by saving money and increase efficiency and more options, on which we cannot put a price tag.

Nowadays, some people claim that public museums and galleries are not necessary anymore because people can see the things in those places on the Internet. Do you agree or disagree?
****************************
Nowadays, with the widespread of the Internet technology, people can visit the online websites of museum and galleries to see the historical collections. As a result, people have different views about the role and function of those places. From my perspective, regardless of the convenience of online collections, the traditional expositions are still indispensable.
Technological advances have revolutionized people’s lives. It is possible to access any information electronically from the remote location and even view exhibitions displayed in art galleries and museums from one’s own bedroom. Nevertheless, viewing them on screen is certainly different from seeing them in person. Take for example a exhibition of sculptures, you can walk all the way around a tjem, see the back, see the marks of labor that made it and learn background information through the description or listening to the tour guide.
Moreover, the museums and art galleries are symbols of the culture of a city, or even a country. They are places where tourists can learn about the local culture and history. One example to illustrate this is the most famous museum in France, the Louvre. It not only has thousands of artworks on display but the museum itself also represents the history of Paris, which greatly helps to promote the reputation of the city and attracts more people to visit it.
That is not to say that the online museums are useless. For many people who are keen on historical objects and artworks, but unfortunately live far away from them, it is cheaper and more convenient to surf the Internet than to visit famous museums and art galleries around the world. But to be honest, it will not impress them as greatly as the real things.
In conclusion, technology can supplement museums and galleries but not replace them as they provide the public with irreplaceable first-hand experience.

Some people believe that students should take a wide range of courses. However, others believe that students would focus on the subject that they are good at or they are interested in. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
************************
There has been a debate about the range of subjects students are encouraged to learn. While some people recommend students to take a wide variety of subjects, others propose a more concentrating way of study.
The main advantage for students to engage into a broad range of subjects is they would be exposed to various disciplines which allow them to understand the work and society from a variety of perspectives. Moreover, these diverse areas of knowledge are connected with each other directly or indirectly, allowing students to better and more deeply understand each subject and inspiring their curiosity to their world. However, every student's aptitude is different. Some students are excellent at language and weak at mathematics. If we force them to study the subject that they find difficult is very likely to dampen the student's enthusiasm and damage their self-confidence, which is certainly the last thing that educators and parents would want to see.
On the other side, by focusing on a few subjects, students tend to able to perform well because they can concentrate their limited time and energy on a narrow range of school work. As a result, it enhance their confidence in their academic ability and sense of achievement. Allowing students to select a small number of courses also gives them the opportunity to be only immersed in their favorite classes or what they are good at instead of these that they have no clue about at all.
My personal view about this controversy is that both sides are based on good sense, and they can be reconciled with each other. During primary, children should be encouraged to get involved in as many areas of knowledge as possible in order to experience the world. Whereas in secondary school, adolescents basically have identified their tendency in academic and career terms, so they should be allowed to narrow down their study to a particular domain related to their future career.

If a product is good or it meets people's needs, people will buy it. Advertising is no more than a form of entertainment. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
*************************
Nowadays, we are surrounded by all kinds of advertisements which is significantly influencing our lives. While it is true that some good products sells even without any propaganda, I disagree that advertisements are unnecessary and only a form to content people.
Advertising offers many advantages that benefits not only manufactures, but also consumers and the society as a whole. For the manufactures, advertising plays a significant role in the introduction of a new product in the market. It also stimulates people to purchase the product which will led to a market expansion. Besides, repeated advertising and better quality of products brings more reputation for the producer and enhances goodwill for the concern. For the consumers, commercials offers a wide range of options, thus buyers can compare and make the best choice according to their needs with the best price. For the society, publicity nourishes people's consuming power and by bringing to the knowledge of the consumers different variety and better quality products, it increase the standard of living of the whole society.
One the other hand, advertisements attract mass consumers by making goods more attractive using creative presentation. In other words, making the product more desirable. As a result, people often buy goods without enough considerations, therefore causing wasteful spending. In addition to this, in order to appeal to a larger section of the population, advertisers uses misleading information or provocative images and violence to attract viewer's attention. Consequently, the product becomes well-known because of advertising appeal they have or the hype created by false advertising.
In conclusion, advertising plays an essential role in society, not only making consumers well-informed buyers but also stimulates the economic development. It is wrong to think publicity just a form of entertainment, even the products that excel in quality needs propaganda in today's competitive market.

Students at schools and universities learn more from lessons with teachers than from others sources (such as the Internet or television). To what extent do you agree or disagree?
***********************
Today, new technologies, such as the Internet and television, has made great changes in education. In spite of this, many people still believe that traditional education system is more useful when it comes to impart knowledge on students. In my personal opinion, although the role of teachers in the classroom is undeniably essential, we still cannot ignore other sources of learning.
Teachers cannot only inculcate knowledge to students, but also instill high moral values and give students inspiration and encouragement. In other words, teachers serves as guides for students, by showing them the path, give them the interpretation, encourage them to think critically and correct the misunderstandings. However, it is also true that not all teachers are qualified and not everyone can go to schools and universities. For instance, some students are afraid of entering the classroom because of the bad impression of teachers or some others, due to personal or economical reasons, cannot attend universities.
For those kind of students, they might feel more comfortable learning with the Internet or television. The easy access to other learning resources has allowed students to learn any subject they are interested in at any time of the day. Moreover, stimulating and complementing the learning experience by employing different sources of information is also beneficial for students. For instance, by doing a research as an assignment for school or university, pupils are forced to read additional material of the topic in order to complete the task, and this kind of extra material are mostly available online. Thus, they are learning with other sources.
To sum up with my view, the pivotal role of educators is acknowledged due to their irreplaceable contribution in any student's learning journey. But equal importance should be given to alternative sources of information during children's development.

Some people argue that modern technology is increasing the gap between the rich and the poor. To what extend do you agree with their opinion?
********************************
Modern technology has literally changed every corner of the world and people's lives basically revolve around it. However, despite all the benefits technology has brought to our life, some people believes that the gap between the wealthy and the needy has also widened because of it. Personally, I agree with this view for the following reasons.
Firstly, there is a major gap between industrialized and developing countries in terms of their access to information and communication technology. While most industrialized countries were linked into the global information economy through high speed information networks and computers, the majority of people in the developing areas had very little or no access to basic information and communication networks, such as the Internet. Indeed, more than half of the people on the planet, mostly in the developing countries, have yet to make a telephone call.
Secondly, people who invented or apply new technology are paid in proportion to their larger market potential that their work holds. High-tech entrepreneurs such as Larry Page and Bill Gates make millions of dollars every minute. Moreover, technology is a form of intellectual capital, this will lead to an increase of income gap due to technological advances. The wealthy can afford better education about technology, they have more intellectual capital to invest as well.
In conclusion, breach between the rich and the poor has been widening because the poor almost inevitably have little chance of understanding and applying new technology; therefore, they are more likely to remain struck in poverty. Thus, I strongly believe, the most effective means to narrow the rich-poor gap would not be through financial aid or taxing the rich more heavily, but by offering better educational and training opportunities to the most needed ones.

@ibtil
@aalaeeTOEFLiBT

In some countries, more people choose to live by themselves in recent years, why is it case? Is it a positive or negative development for society?
