PROPONENT (n.)
One who argues in support of something; an ADVOCATE; a champion of a cause

Although America has faced a number of challenging social problems, our nation has always produced leaders who were strong PROPONENTS of reform . For example, during the 19th century, Jane Addams was an outspoken PROPONENT for urban settlement houses. Today, former Vice-President A1 Gore is a vigorous ADVOCATE of implementing measures that will reduce global warming. One way to remember PROPONENT is to note that the prefix pro means to be for something.

#Speaking Task 3 Sample Response

The professor has proposed that the engineer tutorials be closed, because it’s not easy to find volunteers and it seems that students do not have any great improvement.
However, the speaker does not agree with him. There are two reasons. First of all, PHD students may volunteer to work as tutors, since they need to do tutorials every semester. What’s more, many students think these tutorials are very important and helpful, especially for the exam preparation. In
addition, the speaker also says that the tutorials help him improve his reading ability.

#Speaking Task 4 Sample Response
Vigilance describes a biological instinct that animals will watch the surroundings carefully to ensure there’s no predator nearby. It takes long when an individual animal lives by itself, but when in a group, animals can take turns to be vigilant while others focus on their own business.
The professor talked about an example of the black howler monkey. It attracts eagles. When one monkey is dining, it is less productive because it has to be alert to predators, which may suddenly swoop down from the sky. But in a group, monkeys take turns to watch out for predators so that others can concentrate on eating.

#Speaking Task 6 Sample Response
The lecture talks about two ways of promoting social bonds between companies and customers. The first one is called friendship bond, which aims to let companies clearly understand customers’ needs as well as their preferences. For example, in the barbershop, a barber usually chats with his customers in order to know what kind of haircut they like. In this way, customers feel that they are served well, so they would like to come here again. The second method is called financial bond, which means companies provide more favorable prices to attract customers. For example, a stationery store offers a 10% discount every month to attract more customers and increase sales.
