The Central Government has initiated the process of including the Chhath Mahaparv in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Accepting the demand of the Chhathi Maiya Foundation, the government has directed the Sangeet Natak Akademi to start the procedure for getting this festival recognized internationally

About Chhath Puja (Chhath Mahaparv)

Chhath Puja is a 4-day festival usually in Kartik month (October–November), starting on Chaturthi and ending on Saptami.

Day 1 – Nahay Khay (Bath and Eat)

Devotees bathe in a river or pond, clean surroundings, and eat simple satvik (pure vegetarian) food.


Day 2 – Kharna (Fasting)

The day involves a strict fast, ending in the evening after offering kheer (rice pudding) and roti to the deity. Then the 36-hour Nirjala Vrat (waterless fast) begins.


Day 3 – Sandhya Arghya (Evening Offering)

Devotees offer arghya (water and milk) to the setting Sun at the riverbank.


Day 4 – Usha Arghya (Morning Offering)

Offer arghya to the rising Sun, ending fast.
