Sir Cyril Radcliffe, a British barrister with no prior experience of India, was tasked with drawing the India-Pakistan boundary in 1947. He arrived in India on July 8, with less than six weeks before the British withdrawal, and relied on submissions to the Boundary Commissions rather than personally surveying the areas.

His decisions were guided primarily by contiguous majority areas and existing administrative divisions. The Radcliffe Award was announced only after August 15, with the stated aim of avoiding a dampening of Independence Day celebrations, while historians have argued that the delay also helped shield Britain from responsibility for the violence that followed.

While Radcliffe took most key decisions himself, evidence points to communication between his office and Mountbatten’s government.

Can a country question its caste? India is about to find out.

After decades without a comprehensive caste count, Census 2027 is set to include caste enumeration—a development with major implications for governance, welfare, representation and public policy.

India’s last published comprehensive caste count dates back to 1931. The 2011 Socio-Economic and Caste Census collected caste-related data, but classification and data-quality challenges prevented the caste data from being fully released.

Now, Census 2027 brings the question back to the centre of India’s policy debate.

Why does caste data matter?

How will millions of self-declared caste identities be classified?

Can better demographic data lead to better-targeted policies?

And most importantly—will counting caste strengthen inclusion, or create new complexities?

Bangladesh wants Sheikh Hasina back. But can India refuse extradition?

Bangladesh has sought the extradition of former PM Sheikh Hasina from India.

The issue, however, is not simply diplomatic—it involves international law, the 2013 India–Bangladesh Extradition Treaty, political considerations and questions of justice.

The treaty contains grounds under which extradition may be refused, while the nature of the allegations against Hasina makes the legal question more complicated.

For UPSC aspirants, this is an important case connecting India–Bangladesh Relations + Extradition Law + International Relations + Diplomacy + India’s Neighbourhood Policy.

What should India do—extradite Hasina or refuse the request? Give your reason in the comments.
