For nearly 80 years, mathematicians struggled with a problem first posed by Hungarian mathematician Paul ErdΕ‘s. In May, an OpenAI model not only tackled the challenge but also overturned a long-held assumption about its solution.

Experts say the breakthrough stands out because the model did not simply retrieve existing knowledge. Instead, it drew on ideas from different branches of mathematics to produce a new construction that researchers had not found despite decades of work.

While specialists caution that AI systems still make mistakes and require human verification, the result is being seen as evidence that these models are capable of meaningful scientific reasoning. Researchers say the implications could extend beyond mathematics to fields such as biology, physics, medicine and engineering.

The β‚Ή81,000 crore Great Nicobar project is one of India's largest planned infrastructure developments. Supporters say it could boost connectivity, trade, and strategic capabilities in the Indian Ocean.

Critics, however, have raised concerns about its environmental impact and the future of the Shompen, one of India's most isolated tribal communities.

Here's a look at the debate surrounding the project and the questions that remain unresolved.

NCERT’s new Class 9 Arts textbook Madhurima features the iconic β€œDancing Girl” of Mohenjo-daro with her traditionally bare torso digitally covered.

The bronze figurine, one of the most recognisable artefacts of the Indus Valley Civilisation, has appeared in NCERT textbooks for at least 25 yearsβ€”including during previous NDA governmentsβ€”without any such alteration.

The modified image appears in the opening chapter on the history of arts.

Historian Michel Danino, who earlier resisted attempts to remove the figurine from a Class 6 textbook over concerns about nudity, called the new depiction β€œan act of censorship” and argued that it creates a β€œfake artefact” that does not exist in reality.

NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani told The Indian Express that he was not aware of any specific reason behind the change and noted that the original figurine continues to appear in the Class 6 Social Science textbook.
