Watching the #WorldCup?

So are we.

Millions of football fans attending the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA risk coming face to face with troubling attacks on human rights, not least those stemming from abusive and deadly US immigration policies. Severe restrictions on freedom of expression and peaceful protest threaten the “safe, welcoming and inclusive” tournament promised by #FIFA.

Football cannot ‘unite the world’ while mass deportations continue to devastate families and spread fear and division, or while people are prevented from expressing themselves freely.

In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court says homemakers deserve recognition as “nation builders” for their role in shaping families and future generations.

The court rules that unpaid domestic work must be monetised at a minimum of ₹30,000 per month while calculating compensation in road accident cases. It further observes that women managing households should not be referred to merely as “homemakers”, as the term undervalues their contribution to society.

The landmark ruling comes in an appeal arising from a motor accident claim in Punjab, where a woman died in a road accident in November 2001. Following her death, her husband and three children filed a compensation claim before the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal.

Reproductive agency, the power to decide whether, when, and how to bear children is a vital and necessary component of women’s empowerment, and yet, is often not taken into account when metrics of income, education, mobility and political representation are analysed.

India’s demographic transition, as reflected in the latest round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6, 2023–24), besides revealing incremental changes in health indicators, also signals a structural shift in the domain of reproductive agency.

For nearly 80 years, mathematicians struggled with a problem first posed by Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdős. In May, an OpenAI model not only tackled the challenge but also overturned a long-held assumption about its solution.

Experts say the breakthrough stands out because the model did not simply retrieve existing knowledge. Instead, it drew on ideas from different branches of mathematics to produce a new construction that researchers had not found despite decades of work.

While specialists caution that AI systems still make mistakes and require human verification, the result is being seen as evidence that these models are capable of meaningful scientific reasoning. Researchers say the implications could extend beyond mathematics to fields such as biology, physics, medicine and engineering.
