Illustrations for Sleeping Beauty by Christian Birmingham 2004

"When the King’s son came near to the thorn-hedge, it was nothing but large and beautiful flowers, which parted from each other of their own accord, and let him pass unhurt, then they closed again behind him like a hedge. In the castle-yard he saw the horses and the spotted hounds lying asleep; on the roof sat the pigeons with their heads under their wings. And when he entered the house, the flies were asleep upon the wall, the cook in the kitchen was still holding out his hand to seize the boy, and the maid was sitting by the black hen which she was going to pluck.

He went on farther, and in the great hall he saw the whole of the court lying asleep, and up by the throne lay the King and Queen.

Then he went on still farther, and all was so quiet that a breath could be heard, and at last he came to the tower, and opened the door into the little room where Briar-rose was sleeping. There she lay, so beautiful that he could not turn his eyes away; and he stooped down and gave her a kiss. But as soon as he kissed her, Briar-rose opened her eyes and awoke, and looked at him quite sweetly"

The Shigir Idol and Narrative Archaeology

"The Shigir Sculpture, or Shigir Idol is the oldest known wooden sculpture in the world, made during the Mesolithic period, shortly after the end of the last Ice Age. The wood it was carved from is approximately 12,000 years old. It is displayed in the Sverdlovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore in Yekaterinburg, Russia".- Wikipedia
(However... this conclusion requires ignoring pieces of the artifact)

It is common when such momentous finds are discovered by archaeologists for them to employ Narrative and Storytelling for Archaeological Education methods, which is precisely what they did. They told a story as to what they wished it to be that might garner attention from those curious about our past. But the prevailing conception of the Shigir Idol does not take into account many things. Including where it was found and all of its pieces.

Instead we propose it to be an intricately carved boat much in the fashion we have done since antiquity and continue on into the modern day, painting and carving images and faces into our boats (See Image With Red Arrows). This is further substantiated by its presence in a peat bog, as frequently these bogs were once lakes or ponds. As well as it's size which matches a small boat.

(Pictures Include a close up of the Shigir Idol, a more modern prow carving and an example of a head carved on a Scandinavian Wagon to best illustrate this point.)

Thorin Oakenshield by Heraldo Mussolini

"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. But, sad or merry, I must leave it now. Farewell."-Thorin Oakenshields Last Words to Bilbo before dying, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

The Faerie

The Fae are some of the most well known, feared and adored of all spirits of Europe. They are mischievous, clever, innocent and wrathful. They are also incredibly diverse for they are as many and as complex as the realm of mortals this Middle Earth we call home. They ride Dandelion seeds in the breeze and sing with the birds and the whistling wind. They dance under toadstools and spin flax and flesh in equal measure.
You may have even met the Nobility of the Realm of Fae, the Faerie. For they are indistinguishable from us and breed freely with mortals who capture their affections. The likes of Puck, Badb, The Morrigan, and Brave Sir Arthur The Bear King all have ruled in the lands of Fae. They have danced and loved mortal men and women aplenty.
Many a Man and Woman of our lands have ended up in the Realm of Fae and become great heroes much as those with blood of rich black iron have been born amongst us and not known their true heritage. Bound together, overlapping the Land of Mortal Men and the Fantastical Realm of Fae joined in blood and bond, our gods, our heroes, our dead and our legends all interwoven in the Wyrd that pulls us forward.

The Faerie are not winged sprites with prancing feet and helpless giggles they are a world of mirth and magic, of dances and sorrow and it is to us they come for stories, for heroes, for family.-TLK

A message from the Goddess Babd
Dear child, When you look upon my visage you see an old crone. Wrinkled and shrunken upon myself, wretched and horrifying to behold.

And you are right to think so!

But let me tell you what you do not see, inside. My family is vast stretching the breadth of 100 lands! I am older and more powerful than the land itself, ageless as the stars! My power extends through the ages to the end of our people until the last drop of blood is spent! I AM THE QUEEN OF CROWS!! and I am yours. I am your grandmother and your grand daughter, I am she who comforts the ailing and champions the strong! I know you child, better than you know yourself.
But what should terrify you the most about me is not that I am old, it is not the reach of my power, it is not that I am at the end of my life or that I have nothing to lose. Because that is not true.

No, what should leave you in awe and terrify any who seek my wrath is that I have nothing left to gain but EVERYTHING to lose! This includes you dear one. Whether you like it or not, you were born mine and shall remain so until your last. And I keep what is mine!

With Love

Your Loving Grandmother, Badb

The Yew in Muckross Abbey

Over in Killarney so many years ago (1652 to be exact) Muckross Monastery was abandoned.
Within its cloistered walls lies a wonderous Yew Tree. Said by some to be 400 years old, others claim much older some say as old as the Abbey itself (Founded 1448), while another legend holds that a Monk was buried beneath it after returning there to die, or that a magical Marian Idol is buried beneath and any damage to the tree will result in the individuals death within a year, along with many other superstitions.
These legends all have something in common, attempts to Christianize the Yew tree. A plant intertwined root and stem within the Native Hyperborean Traditions of Ireland. Abbeys were often built around Yew trees which marked Pagan Holy Sites.
This Mighty Yew has reclaimed the courtyard of Muckross Abbey within Killarney National Park in County Kerry, Ireland for the Old Gods.

The Abbey was burnt down for the most recent of many times by Oliver Cromwell who led the armies of the Parliament of England against King Charles 1 in 1652.

The Old Gods Prevail.
