Awakening from their slumber from the winter, our ursine brethren rub the sleep from their eyes and look at their surroundings outside the den.

Hyperboreans have more in common with our bear brethren than any other creature of the wilderness.
Folklore, Mythology, bear cults, and festivals revere the king of ancient forestland and shows how important the bear is to our people.
See for yourself, look to our ursine brethren, see the similarities and how our own yearly biological cycle mirrors theirs.

What was once covered in ice and snow is now vibrant with the heraldic songs of joy and life that the forest brings with the return of spring.

A fresh start. A cycle of renewal. A rebirth.

Folklore of South Carolina: The Open Tomb of Julia Legare

Julia Legare was visiting family on Edisto Island, in the mid-1800s.

During her visit she fell ill, and died from fever...or so they thought.

Her relatives entombed her in the family mausoleum.

15 years later, when the tomb mausoleum was re-opened to lay another family member to rest, her relatives were horrified to find Julia's skeleton lay at the entrance.

Though she had been pronounced dead, she had actually slipped into coma so deep that the doctor could not detect a heartbeat.

Full of sorrow, Julia's family put her remains back as they had left them all those years ago.

Ever since her skeleton was discovered, the mausoleum door would not latch.

Her family saw this as a sign that Julia's spirit wished them to prevent the same date happening to anyone else.

The door was removed, and now Julia rests peacefully.

Finally, after many months and two iterations later, I have finally completed the Eikþyrnir concept art. Eikþyrnir is the sacred white stag of Yggdrasil, thought to inhabit the grounds of Valhalla, consuming the leaves of Yggdrasil’s highest branch, Laeradr. Eikþyrnir draws his strength from Yggdrasil, providing him with the means to produce a mysterious fluid (thought to be the source of all rivers flowing through the realms) that drips from his antlers and into Hvergelmir.

The concept was a lot of fun to paint, creating a dynamic workflow which resulted in an art piece that tested my skills. Unfortunately I had 5 days to do this, so the end is somewhat rushed, especially my Viking subject at the bottom (I had to paint him in two hours). Hopefully he does not look too awkward or out of place. The foreground trees are suppose to represent the hands of Jörð rising from the Earth. A bit of powerful symbolism there.

Mr. & Mrs. Easter Bunny

Among the many myths of Easter there are none quite so beloved and widespread as the tale of the Easter Bunny or Hare. The magical Bunny that lays eggs placing them in nests made from forest moss or baskets woven in bright colors. There is more to this Faerie than meets the eye.
In fact he has a family, especially his beloved wife Mrs. Easter Hare, they can actually take human form if they choose, in fact it seems that Mrs. Easter Hare is a memory of the goddess Eastre hidden in animal form with her fertile lover.
Together they still deliver eggs to the children of her people, in Easter Lore many of the animals of the forest help, squirrels (Lollus), boars (Dirk), foxes (Reynard) and many many more.

Effectively the cult of the Easter gods never stopped continuing on disguised as a family of hares and their woodland friends.-TLK

What is a Shaman or a Witch or even a Wizard in the modern world? A person who focuses all of their efforts on the esoteric and the hidden, the spiritual world of the unseen and intangible. They chase about spirits and pray to the gods, they perform rituals of hidden and forgotten magic with their various magical items and flute and banging their drums while chanting their chants into the void for the good of all mankind.

But of what use is this to those who truly are in need of aid? Will this fill the bellies of the hungry? Provide shelter? Perhaps it will aid the person suffering of shattered bones or whose very life blood is pouring out onto the ground? Maybe it will cure the sick? Maybe it can help with the baby breached during birth? Possibly these deep and ancient magics can relieve the pain of scars. Maybe the songs of the spirits will grant victory to those who have never known combat when the killing and dying begins?

If not. Well then what use are they in the face of the harsh realities of life? Do you really think people of such little skill were truly held up as paragons of our native societies? Truly sought after for their wisdom and understanding? Their knowledge of that which can cause no direct harm? Or are they most likely charlatans preying upon the desperate, the bored and the rich?

The Birth of Paul Bunyan

There are many tales of the birth of Paul Bunyan and how he came to be. One story says he was brought by a flock of storks to his family, others claim he washed ashore in a giant basket, some say he was born a normal boy and was blessed by the Man in the Moon with his size and abilities. But my favorite story is that he was born of the forest itself. Immortalized in folk songs as

"Son of a Great White Oak was He! His Father was a Redwood Tree!"

Paul was born as a tree seed, usually an Acorn and from there he grew into a tree and decided he wanted to know what was over yonder hill and pulled up his roots and began to walk becoming the first and only "Paul Bunyan Tree", others have it closer to old Fairy Tales where he may have been born of an acorn but he grew into a man all the same, a large giant of a man the God of the Northwoods for the American People.

Dear Mothers

Women speak of wanting unconditional love. This love is to be found in your sons.
While it is true a son might grow to dislike his mother he will ALWAYS love his Mommy. There is not a son among our people, child or grown, that would not move the world to save his mommy or raise every last inch of it in vengeance of her. He will love her completely and truly for the entirety of his life even after she is gone.
So raise your sons well.
Be gentle with them but remember you are raising a warrior. A child born and bred specifically to defend his people with the same vigor he would defend you. Teach him the respect and responsibilities required of a warrior who may one day gain acclaim among his people.
Teach him his value and the value of others.
Through you he will learn what a woman SHOULD be (so be a noble example) eventually demanding the same of a wife to give you grandchildren who will also honor their grandmother. Become honored, raise your sons with dignity and pride!
