Columbia, American Goddess of War
Along with representing the country itself and it's ideals Columbia is also a war goddess. In The Apotheosis of Washington in the Capitol Building she is the only non-Roman goddess featured among the attributes of America, symbolizing War and the strength with which America could protect and vanquish her enemies. While Columbia does find antecedents and contemporaries in Lady Liberty and the Roman Libertas, she also succeeds Minerva as a war goddess, with shield, sword, and Eagle companion she will mercilessly fight America's enemies and valiantly support the men in the war effort, often being used as a promotional image to call men to war, to both honor and protect our goddess.

Americans choose or create heroes in their own image.
In a complex industrial society, hero-making goes on at various levels, so that every walk of life and almost every occupation have their heroes.
Thus, on the one hand, the schoolbooks and popular literature of edification draw upon the ranks of leaders—explorers, pioneers, soldiers, statesmen, inventors, and industrialists—for patron saints and tutelary geniuses, to inspire love of country or teach the ethics of success.
On the other hand, the dime-novel concealed behind the geography book glorifies the gentlemen on horseback and the demons with the six-shooter.
Midway between these two extremes is an American fairyland of strong men and giants who perform the impossible.

You desire absolution? Well let me tell you now, the temple of my people offers no absolution to your offenses. They are yours and yours alone to carry for the remainder of your life.
You will find no forgiveness here. With us you must grow strong enough to bear your past transgressions yourself and move forward providing strength for others who must shelter in your shadow until they are strong enough to stand on their own. Our burden is great. Are you sure you desire this?

Behave like the God you were born to be.
This does not mean to carry yourself with a false arrogance unbefitting to mortal or god.
No, it means to help your people. Do not stand by in selfish silence watching the suffering around you. Give more than you take. Demand nobility of yourself and others who wish to associate with you. Never be cruel never be cowardly but do nurture the ruthlessness and brutal nature within yourself. Love, do not fear showing love or being loved. Embrace the pain of your people making it your own. Laugh, find the joy and the absurdity in life, do not feeling guilt over experiencing laughter nor joy. Become what you want to see in others Strong, Courageous, Wise understanding.
We are an ancient people the well of our pain runs deep driving us ever forward with a relentless drive we cannot resist.
