Lucette, is another giant of American Folklore. Or in this case a "Giantess" she is considered the Sweetheart of Paul Bunyan in certain subsections of Minnesotan lore. She was said to make the best quilts around and initially spurn Paul's advances. Though in later telling she is called his Wife and some have even claimed she gave birth to his son Paul Bunyan Jr. In the above picture she can be seen quilting the crops into the earth a blood memory call back to fertility goddesses of the land perhaps?-TLK

"Among the steelworkers of the Northeast, especially those of Slavic or Hungarian descent, there is a legend known as “The Saga of Joe Magarac”. Joe Magarac was sometimes known as the Paul Bunyan of steel workers. Born of a mountain filled with ore. Joe Magarac was made of the very steel he worked to form, and he was far stronger than any average man, able to do effortlessly what caused men in their primes, eyes to burst from their head in exhaustion. He would work day and night in the steel mills. He had no use for a wife or a house, and in fact his very workstation had been labeled “The Home of Joe Magarac”. Where he stirred the molten steel with his bare hands and took handfuls to form the rails and implements the steel became. He made steel so well and so fast that the plant eventually was forced to close for a few days, due to supply exceeding demand."

George Washington and the Cherry Tree by Grant Wood 1939

One of the most well known pieces of folklore and myth regarding the Founding Fathers is that of George Washington and the Cherry Tree. Where upon receiving a Hatchet George cuts down his fathers Cherry Tree. When his father confronts him, George admits it "I cannot tell a lie. I did cut it with my hatchet." His father embraced him and told him that his sons honesty was worth more than a 1000 trees. This story first appeared in a biography after his death published by Mason Locke Weems. It exemplified what he considered the virtues of the near deified former President. It went onto become a popular children's folktale reminiscent of a Fable or Parable.-TLK

While Midsummer may have faded in popularity in America, the traditions sure haven't! They merely transferred over to the Holiday of Independence Day (4th of July). Two notable examples include the use of Fireworks, which were once used to scare away malicious spirits, Guns were also at times fired off instead. While another notable tradition is the use of sparklers, which are the modern incarnation of a European tradition involving the burning of brooms covered in pitch to produce sparks. They would be lit by the young men at the Midsummer Bonfires and they would go around chasing each other with them sending off sparks. -TLK

Doc Holliday is a folkloric hero and renegade of the American West. He is most famous for being a part of the shootout at the O.K. Corral along with Wyatt & Virgil Earp. Though many other tales exist of Doc Holliday, while once a somewhat dandyish Southern dentist Doc Holliday was diagnosed with Tuberculosis, he then moved to the west for his health. Then realizing the illness would kill him he began to court death in battle to avoid death in hospice. Even walking into hails of bullets while methodically loading his gun and taking out a man per shot, all in order to court death. He even spent time running around with Billy the Kid. His time of solitude in the wilderness even resulted in him "Coming to know the many gods" as he once said. He failed to get his wish to die in battle and instead died in a hospital bed at age 36, he lived more in 36 years than most do in a hundred. He lives on as a true American Pagan Hero. -TLK
