The Wild Hunt: The Wild Hunt is one of the most widespread and expansive myths of Europe. To try to contain this myth in one post is impossible, but I will hit the high notes and let this serve as the introduction. The Wild Hunt also known as the Furious Host along with many other names: The Infernal Host, The Santa Compana, The Riders of the Sidhe, the Ghost Riders in the Sky, The Parade of Spirits, The Goat Riders, The Chase Hellequin, the Hosts of Hell, The Eternal hunt, and much much more. The individuals who are said to be a part of it or lead it shift place to place and while many claim the god Woden as the original head we simply cannot know where and how this widespread myth originated. While a majority of the legends are present in the continental Germanics this is only partly true in it being under the name “The Wild Hunt” or the other very popular name “The Furious Host” it is however by many other names far more widespread across Europe and depending on who you ask is a very ancient myth or it originates in the Middle Ages. The Wild Hunt has many facets too, sometimes it is clearly the personification of storms especially regarding the Winter winds and snow storms, with the hunt and quarry being the victims of those storms. Sometimes gods such as The Wild Huntsman warn people to get home before the storm. One figure the Faithful Eckhart often acts as the herald especially regarding Holle as the Wild Huntress, going ahead of the hunt to warn those of the Hunts arrival. Other times the hunt acts as a psychopomp picking up spirits of the land and the dead and carrying them away on the parade of spirits. This is most clearly associated with the hunts that take place around Halloween such as Holle's Parade of spirits. This also ties in to the Hunts quarries land spirits and individuals out in the storms. Other aspects seem to have the legend functioning as Punishment via the Christian God such as with Dirk and his Boar or Frau Gode or The Ghost Riders in the Sky leading “the devils herd” in the American West. An interesting part of the Hunt is that many of the accounts written by the church seem to have likely originated from Carnival type processions with “demonic” costumes that would've been mistaken by the unaware priests. Though whether this is the origin of the entire story or merely an example of the Carnival representing the Hunt and then getting fed back into the myth it represents by the clergy. Into the modern day many facets have continued forth two examples of the myth changing over time include both Santa Claus' ride and The Ghost Riders in the sky, these are two of the version present in America alone. The Hunt also travels with many spirits and magic users, including daemons, grimhounds(black dogs), witches, cats, lost souls, and much much more. While members of the Wild Hunt include an array of European mythic figures including: Yarillo, Perchta, Holle, Wode, King Arthur, Harlequin, Wotan, Heuke, Berchtold, Dirk, Barbarossa, Finn Mccool, The Devil, Wode, Ewicher Yeeger, Frau Gode, Diana, Thor, Krampus, and much more. The American versions includes a relatively unknown cowboy named Sawyer, a trail boss who led to the deaths of many men and cattle. Though other figures of American myth could be argued of having been integrated over time given the legends of the West. The Wild Hunt also appears in the Spring where at least in Germany they have a specific quarry in the Goddess Walpurga who they hunt, though if she escapes Winter is said to end. Other times they bring spring as some deities like Frau Harke bring fertility when they ride by. All in all one of the oldest and increasingly well known myths of Europe is one that should definitely have a closer look by many of our people.

Being Wylder Folk, of the great and mighty Hyperborean tribes. We approach this with a sense of responsibility to our people. We bring to you the tools to lift up yourself and each other. We bring to you the harsh unapologetic realities regarding our nature as a people, the things we all know to be true, but few have the courage to admit. Our motivation is our deep unyielding love for our people, and it will always be our driving force. Our kindness is deep, our brutality relentless.
More important to us than any dry academic approach or some useless esoteric mumbling, even more than the gods of our people. More important than all of this by far, is you. Our people. We shine the light on who we are through our celebrations, our stories, our loves and even betrayals. Through understanding ourselves and how we fell so low we might heal and once again find both our pride and the strength to stand, not only for ourselves but each other!

In 1890, painter William L. Wyllie, put on a diving helmet he made out of a biscuit tin and dived into the English Channel near Brighton. He created this painting, from what he saw, titled “Davey Jones Locker”.

When The Great Seal of the United States was being designed many designs came and went. Thomas Jefferson was said to have suggested that the reverse include "Hengist and Horsa, the Saxon chiefs from whom we claim the honor of being descended, and whose political principles and form of government we have assumed." Indicating not only a Germanic origin for many of the aspects of the government the founding fathers set up, but also shows the attachment to ancestry Jefferson had. Keep in mind the Eddas were not translated to English until 1797 years after America was founded. It was not only Roman aspects but also those of the Europeans of the North who formed the foundational tenants of this land. -TLK
Today is Flag Day, which immediately brings to mind Betsy Ross, at least for me. While it is a relatively low profile holiday usually filled with professions of love for the flag and all it represents, I will follow suit yet perhaps in a different way. I do love the Betsy Ross Flag, and the folklore of this sort of spinning mother goddess stand in of American Folklore. Who according to folklore even fed soup to those who would then cross the Delaware (Whether or not its true is up for debate). She is an important and oft overlooked figure of the vanishing American folklore and culture, the same that contained Doc Holliday, Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, Pecos Bill, Mountain Men, Fearsome Critters, daring heroes, and giant catfish. There is more to American culture than trucks, flags, guns, and football. While many will try to reduce the culture of those who settled this continent to little more than flag waving and Multicultural platitudes we are so much more, we have so much more, Betsy is part of it.-TLK
The Sorcerer is a cave painting found in "The Sanctuary" portion of the Cave of the Trois-Freres in France. It is notable for its humanoid aspects in contrast to the rest of the paintings being animals. It is over 10,000 years old and is typically considered to be of extreme importance. Either being a depiction of shamanic ritual or a depiction of the Horned god himself. Though other options exist the chimera like being does call to mind both European shamanic practices (Witchcraft) and any number of European horned gods such as Herne, Akerbeltz, Pan, Veles, Cernunnos, Etc.-TLK

Very early on, before ships had rudders on their centerlines, boats were controlled using a steering oar.
Most sailors were right handed, so the steering oar was placed over or through the right side of the stern.
Sailors began calling the right side the steering side, which soon became "starboard" by combining two Old English words: stéor (meaning "steer") and bord (meaning "the side of a boat").
As the size of boats grew, so did the steering oar, making it easier to tie a boat up to a dock on the side opposite the oar. This side became known as larboard, or "the loading side." Over time, larboard—too easily confused with starboard—was replaced with port. After all, this was the side that faced the port, allowing supplies to be ported aboard by dock workers and crew.
Davy Jones, is a modern sea deity of the European people. He has recently gained popularity thanks to the near lovecraftian representation in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. He is often considered a spirit of the sea or by many Christians lore the “devil of the sea” with Davy Jones locker being the Hell to the Fiddlers Green sort of meadow of the ancestors/Heaven. He is said to be able to manipulate the wind and sea to a degree in order to help or hinder sailors. When in human form he often takes the form of a fisherman or a pirate but is also able to change into different forms of sea life such as an ancient barnacle encrusted whale or a large octopus or squid or really anything, this is so well known that once when an ancient looking whale was caught it was if they had caught “Davy Jones himself”. When sailors die at sea and sink to “Davy Jones Locker” this is often used as a euphemism for the sea floor and in common parlance a kind of hell, but is actually a sort of reward or kindness or even gift given by Davy Jones who then takes the sailors onto his crew who can sail for eternity or as long as you like.
A sort of eternal voyage for those who have the sea in their hearts. Davy Jones himself was said to have opened his Locker especially for Stormalong the American folk hero/demigod and original able bodied sailor, though in others Stormalong sails amongst the clouds for eternity. Davy Jones is often treated as a member of King Neptune's court especially during Equator crossing ceremonies in the US navy. Numerous attempts to Christianize or make foreign Davy Jones have occurred from accusing him of being Jonah to King David to an English pub owner to a sort of Indian spirit. The story of his love for Calypso is actually a part of his folklore and was not made up for the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Davy Jones is even featured in the United States official Navy Song where it is sung “Sink their boats to Davy Jones Hooray!”. So next time you are at sea and see a rather old fish or beast of the deep perhaps it is Davy Jones getting a good look at you, for he is not to a specific ethnic group but to our people when we are among the sea. What is your favorite thing about Davy Jones?
The Family of The Grand Duke of Hesse by Heinrich Von Angeli 1879
Baba Yaga is an interesting goddess, she is most often thought of as the Boogeyman in modern contexts, but she is actually a far older and influential goddess. She is the one who tests the courage of heroes, the one who helped Vasalisa the Beautiful, a Russian heroine. She is also at times considered the love of Veles. In many tales Baba Yaga is depicted as living near or across a river of fire. A motif in folklore that indicates the boundary between this realm and that of the dead. In essence Baba Yaga dwells at the liminal spaces of life and death, while also governing rites of passage for the living.-TLK
Titania and Oberon are the fairy king and queen known to pop culture, similar to Puck they too have roots in the folklore before Shakespeare popularized them. Though unlike Puck it is less blatant. Titania is often thought to have her name derived from Diana, who became the fairy queen and a witch goddess in European folklore. With the name being contorted with time and translation by the time of Shakespeare. Oberon however is often thought to come from French folklore and originated from the dwarf/elf Alberich most well known from Wagner's operas though he originated in folklore long before than. Both these origins are generally accepted though there are obvious holes a more clear origin has yet to emerge in my research. - TLK
Externsteine is an ancient monument in the Teutoberg Forest. It has many carvings some pagan some "Christian", with specific openings that help pinpoint the Summer Solstice. It was likely an ancient cult site associated with Eostar as a Summer Goddess and Ostara the Saxon Moon goddess, as the large stones were also called "Moon stones". The monument is also the origin of the modern symbol of Irminsul, where the symbol is depicted as cut down while the modern symbol is standing up in honor of the old god Irmin.-TLK
