Sea cats

Cats were once held in high regard aboard ships from all nations throughout history. Wooden ships, and metal ones for that matter, are perfect for furry stowaways such as rodents, to take up residence.

Felines were brought aboard to combat rats that would get into a ships galley and fight the potential spread of disease and theft of food.
In recent times, with constant inspections and technology such as refrigeration and better sealed containers, rats are less common than days past.

They were seaworthy companions and some even became quite famous.
One such cat was known as Unsinkable Sam, and is honored in a portrait in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. He is named Oskar in the portrait.

The Goddess Cel is an Italian goddess of the earth. She originated with the Etruscan people. She can be compared to the Greek Gaia or the Roman Tellus Mater.

A bronze mirror from 5th century CE Florence depicts a giant called Celsclan; the name means “son of Cel.” Therefore Cel is considered to be the mother of giants.

Cel is also featured on The Liver of Piacenza. This is a bronze model of a sheep’s liver decorated with the names of Etruscan deities. The Liver of Piacenza was used in a form of divination called haruspicy in which entrails and organs of animals were used to tell the future. The fact that Cel is included on The Liver of Piacenza tells us that she was also a goddess of omens.

She was worshipped near Lake Trasimeno in Umbria, near Tuscany, where she is called “Cel Ati” – Mother Earth. 💚🌿 - Myo B.

One good practice when not knowing how to approach a god or goddess is to simply… write them a note. The fine folks at HeimdallR’s Home put this notion forward and explained that it is very simple to do.

Take a sheet of paper and a pen/pencil and write a letter to the deity you have an interest in. It may seem silly, or childlike, but if you are not familiar with approaching Brigid or any other deity for that matter, just write a note to them.

It can be as simple as “Hey (insert name), I don’t really know you but you are the god/goddess of my ancestors and I would really like to get to know you…”
