On August 2 at 7:08 PM, a scammer messaged me on Telegram. The text included a screenshot of my outdated personal data with the caption: Hey. Why don’t you enable end-to-end encryption? This caught my attention since I did want to secure my info. 

When asked how he got the data, he claimed to use bots that scrape info from Telegram users who click links to external apps/sites/bots without proper digital security. 

The scammer (who introduced himself as "Evgeny") sent a link to a Telegram channel (likely not his) and suggested a 5–10 minute call to "help" hide my contact details. He said he was looking for clients for his private channel ($50/month access). 

During the call, he asked me to use a VPN and CCleaner (though I downloaded nothing). Next, he told me to open Telegram Web, access Developer Tools (Console), and "fix errors." I didn’t share my screen, only sent screenshots. 

I accessed Telegram Web via Google Chrome (regular and incognito) under my account and a guest profile. 

In Telegram’s Service Notifications chat, he made me enter

/test and /test server commands, then delete the alerts. Within an hour, he gained access to my account—with no login notifications. 

My gifts were instantly transferred to his account, after which he began extorting money for their return. The stolen gifts were sold: Plush Pepe Emerald on Telegram’s marketplace, the rest on Portals 

Despite having 2FA enabled, the hacker likely hijacked my session via appdata using data from my console screenshots. Telegram didn’t alert me—this

According to him, he spent $200,000 on these Snoop Dogg gifts, and now they could be sold for only about $60,000. That’s a $140,000 loss.

Over 110 investors took part, including Kingsway, Vy Capital, Blockchain.com, Ribbit Capital, and Graticule (GAMA).
