Every workplace in Singapore encouraged to have mental wellbeing champions 👌

A recent study by Duke-NUS and the Institute of Mental Health revealed the economic impact of mental health issues on productivity in Singapore. In light of the findings, a question was raised in Singapore's Parliament on plans to introduce mandatory mental health awareness and training programmes for employers and managers.

In response, the Ministry of Manpower noted: "There is a wide range of businesses that vary in the nature of work, size of company, supervisor-employee ratio, employee needs and company resources.

"There is also a wide spectrum of mental health conditions and a wide range of factors affecting one’s mental health, some of which are beyond the workplace. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to supporting mental health and wellbeing for employees."

Businesses are still wrestling with integrating sustainability fully into their company strategy 🍃

A survey of 879 respondents from over 25 markets and 19 industries revealed that respondents from APAC and Oceania discover, acknowledge, and respond more effectively towards embedding sustainability compared to their counterparts in the US and Europe.

A majority (91%) from the region somewhat or strongly agreed that their company has a clear understanding of how long-term trends impact the future value of their company.

But why there is still a gap between intentions and prioritisation of the environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) agenda? Capacity challenges and self-declared lack of expertise at the board level are cited by the report as two of the reasons. https://bit.ly/IntegratingSustainabilityFully

Don't be a bystander: It's time to speak out against workplace harassment 🤏

We all know that feeling of discomfort. It could be at the office pantry or over a Zoom meeting, and someone makes a casual racist comment, or a joke filled with sexual innuendo.

We hope someone intervenes to say something, anything, to stand up to the disrespectful comment or behaviour. But we do not, because of a phenomenon called the "bystander effect".

Studies suggest that when a victim needs help, the more people there are looking on, the lower the chances of someone stepping in. This is due to a diffusion of responsibility: everyone assumes someone else in the group will act, but no one does.

More often than not, these onlookers remain silent. As a result, the perpetrator could end up getting away with their actions, while harassment becomes normalised in the workplace.

Eligible employers in 3 services sub-sectors in Malaysia can now hire foreign workers 👏

Malaysia's government is now allowing employers in three sub-sectors – barbers, textiles, and goldsmiths – to recruit foreign workers, with a quota of 7,500 in place.

Recruitment in these sub-sectors had previously been frozen since 2009, with Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar noting that the reopening is "not comprehensive" and will be based on the actual needs of these sub-sectors.

"This step will also stop the tendency of employers to employ foreign nationals without valid employment documents," he added. "We are aware that this tendency has great potential for exploitation and forced labour practices."
