What’s that smell?
The ‘mouldy odour’ in damp, water damaged buildings, might not be due to the mould itself, but from the aerosolization of toxic chemicals present in construction material. For example, chloroanisoles, a group of toxic chemicals used as a timber preservative, are converted into chlorophenols in the presence of dampness and mould. Chlorophenols are level 1 carcinogens, they cause acute intoxication in humans, and give off a characteristic ‘mouldy odour’. Exposure to these chemicals results in symptoms that resemble mould related illness.
A recent 2024 study concluded that the adverse health effects of these toxic substances has been confused with mould exposure. They also stated that ambiguous and misleading terms such as “sick building syndrome” and “dampness and mould” should be avoided, as they neglect or obscure more important hazards such as exposure to harmful man-made chemicals.
Mould isn't the problem, it's the toxic building material.

In 1845, the Royal Society of Medicine held an enquiry into influenza. They found that pandemics spread East to West, irrespective of which direction the prevailing winds blew. Even when the winds came from the West, the direction of spread remained unaffected.
In 1951, the Royal Society held another committee on influenza. In relation to the East to West phenomenon, Dr. Edgar Hope Simpson said, “The spread of influenza is roughly geographical, and not as one would expect along the lines of communication”.
If influenza is contagious, then the pattern of spread should reflect human social behaviour. That is, pandemics should have an epicenter and spread outwards in all directions. Curiously, every major pandemic in history has dispersed in an East to West direction. This environmental trend is incompatible with the theory of contagion.
If influenza is indeed communicable why would it follow a preferred direction of travel?

There is a growing trend to blame the consumption of plant foods as the cause of disease. It is said that naturally occurring plant compounds cause disease in healthy people. Ex-carnivores Daniel and Emrys take a deep dive into this topic. Do the consumption of edible plants really cause disease, or are there other factors at play? Are plants being used as scapegoats to cover up for the harmful effects of far more insidious causes?

We are told that diseases like cancer have always been prevalent, and that the reason why cancer rates appear to be on the rise is because medicine is better at detecting it.
But is this really the case?
In 1995, a review was conducted assessing the diagnostic accuracy of cancer. The paper concluded that “The misdiagnosis rate has not really changed since even as far back as 1912. One would have expected a significant improvement in accuracy to have accompanied the introduction of various 'hi-tech' investigation modalities. This has not occurred. Has the precision of clinical diagnosis really come so far? Any argument which proposes that current performance levels and methods are adequate, or do not require assistance, rests on very shaky evidence”.
Given this revelation, how can anyone claim the increasing cancer prevalence is simply down to 'better detection methods'? Maybe the real reason cancer rates appear to be on the rise, is that they are.

Remember when we believed dietary cholesterol caused cardiovascular disease? Foods containing high levels like eggs, meat, and dairy were demonised. This myth was eventually dispelled when doctors and scientists realised the majority of the body’s cholesterol is produced by organs like the liver. Consequently, we no longer think dietary cholesterol is to blame.
Unbelievably, this same kind of defunct thinking is used when it comes to dietary oxalates. Many people blame plant derived oxalates as the cause of diseases like kidney stones and so-called ‘inflammatory conditions’. However, just like cholesterol, the overwhelming majority of oxalates are produced by organs like the liver.
Curiously, there's also a lack of clinical trials demonstrating a cause-and-effect relationship between oxalates and any disease, which is also the case with cholesterol.
The longer we continue to wrongfully attribute blame to an innocent compound, the longer the true culprit goes unrecognised.

Why are we so quick to blame ‘oxalates’ as the cause of disease, when it could be humans meddling with the food supply?
Oxalate levels in plants can be affected directly by pesticides like thiocyclam hydrogen oxalate. This pesticide is absorbed systemically and distributed throughout plant tissue.
Other pesticides like glufosinate can impact the oxalate levels indirectly. Glufosinate, the most widely used herbicide, works by inhibiting plant enzymes which causes a build up of glycolate and glyoxylate. These compounds can be up to 900% higher than in plants not sprayed with glufosinate.
Most of the body’s glyoxylate pool is derived from the breakdown of body tissue, and animal protein. However, excessive levels can be toxic. To deal with this, the kidney converts glycolate and glyoxalate into to oxalate which is excreted in the urine.
So, is it really the naturally occurring oxalate in food that is the problem, or the relentless bombardment of crops with pesticides?

It's absurd how over-complicated nutrition has become. After 15 years in this profession, I have come to the conclusion that any and all attempts to try and understand how a specific food compound works inside the human body is an utterly futile exercise.
We don’t nourish our body with isolated and purified substances, we nourish it with whole food. There are thousands of compounds in food all working together in perfect concert with one another. This phenomenon is known as ‘food synergy’ or the ‘food matrix’, the intricacies of which, the field of nutrition will never truly comprehend.
Trying to understand how substance X works inside a living human being is one thing, but how does it work in the presence of Y, or Z, or the countless other compounds in food, many of which haven’t even been ‘discovered’ yet? Don’t be fooled by those who claim ‘this or that’ substance is the cause of all your health problems, because the truth is, no one knows. No one will ever know.
Real food doesn’t cause disease, so rather than being fixated on what’s in the things we eat, our attention should be focused on how we grow, harvest, store, transport, prepare, and consume it. We can only be as healthy as the soil our food is grown in. So, let’s stop raping, pillaging, and poisoning the Earth beneath our feet. How long can we continue blaming mother nature for a man-made problem before she bites back?
It’s time to get back to basics. Know where your food is coming from. Connect with local farmers who are doing things the right way. Eat what your ancestors ate. Eat locally, sustainably, seasonally, and fresh. Prepare your own food with time, care, and attention. Cook and enjoy meals with the people that you love. Consume mindfully and graciously. Eat the food that makes you happy.
Everything else is noise.

As long as pesticides are being sprayed on our food, how can anyone claim with any certainty, that naturally occurring plant compounds like 'oxalates', cause disease?
In 2005, Monsanto's Roundup formula was modified to contain a synthetic form of oxalic acid (oxalate) instead of sodium sulfite.
We find ourselves in a situation, where billions of tons of pesticides are being sprayed on our crops every year which contain synthetic oxalates. Yet, when people start becoming sick, they blame the plant instead of the poison. In what reality does this make any logical sense?

Between 1965 & 1979, Dr Roberto Baruzzi led a medical team deep in to the Amazon rainforest. Over a period of 14 years, they studied the health of over 500 Xingu Indians who had limited contact with the outside world & maintained a traditional lifestyle. Baruzzi's findings put a question mark over the claim that ‘chronic disease is just a part of life’.
None of the Xingu were overweight or obese. In fact, they were in peak physical condition. Not a single case of heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, heart attack, or stroke was identified. There was no gangrene, varicose veins, or intermittent claudication. Gastrointestinal diseases were non-existent. There were no gastric ulcers, hernias, appendicitis, diverticulitis, or haemorrhoids. Just five cases of cancer occurred, three of which were skin cancers.
These results indicate that disease is exceedingly rare in humans who live in harmony with nature.
Disease is not a part of life, it’s a consequence of modernity.

In 1928, Admiral Richard E. Byrd was given command of a fleet of U.S. Navy vessels. His mission was to explore the frozen and mysterious lands of Antarctica. Shortly after arriving, the crew established a military base atop of the Ross Ice Shelf where they would live in complete isolation from the outside world.
More than 12 months later, influenza broke out amongst the ranks stationed at the base. This outbreak perplexed the men, because there was no obvious source of infection. To reconcile this anomaly, they argued that influenza germs must have stowed away inside a box of clothing. This explanation seems rather implausible considering influenza can only ‘survive’ on surfaces for 48 hours, let alone an entire year.
This outbreak, along with several others documented by isolated Antarctic explorers throughout history, directly opposes the claim that influenza is caused by a contagious virus.
Many other examples like this one are covered in my book Can You Catch A Cold?

Chronic stress is commonly blamed as a cause of disease. But how can the stress response be the cause of the problem?
The stress response is one of the body’s innate survival mechanisms. It is designed to alert you to, and deal with, a threat (a stressor). The threat is the cause of the disease, not the body’s response to it.
When you are exposed to a threat, the body silently communicates this to you. Whether or not you chose to listen to this message is up to you.
Blaming stress as the problem is erroneous because it implies the body is doing something wrong. Stress is the body’s way of attempting to restore balance.
Dealing with stressors might simply require a shift in your perspective, so that you no longer perceive it as such. It might require slight changes to your daily routine. It might mean having to completely alter the course of your life. Either way, you don’t have to put up with it.
Living a relatively stress free life is within your control.

Modern science and medicine tells us that diseases have always been with us. They state the reason why disease is becoming more prevalent in modern times is because we have longer life expectancy and better diagnostic methods. However, these claims are in direct contrast with anthropological and historical evidence, medical assessments of tribes who have no contact with the outside world, and testimonies of native tribes people from around the world.

Between 1913-14, the U.S.S Bear, sailed along the Arctic Coast. The medical officers on board visited Eskimo villages to observe the health of the inhabitants.
The medical team noted that isolated Eskimo's were healthy and robust people with little or no disease. They reported that disease was far more prevalent in Eskimo's living near mining camps, whaling stations, and trading posts, despite having access to medical care.
The increased prevalence could have been due to a deviation away from the Eskimo's traditional way of life. Missionaries had influenced their customs. Westerners brought food into communities that Eskimo's did not know how to prepare properly. Introduced species, like reindeer, altered their traditional dietary and lifestyle practices, and disturbed the environment. The resulting illnesses were said to be 'contagious' as they appeared to 'spread' throughout the community.
Was disease really spreading, or was it the effect of adopting an unnatural way of life?
