Episode 71: Emrys Goldsworthy - A Bone of Contention

Is our understanding about musculoskeletal injuries incorrect? Did you know that many people who have musculoskeletal pain, have no observable abnormalities on a CT, MRI or X-Ray? Did you know that many people who have observable tissue damage on these scans have no pain? How can this possibly be? Emrys Goldsworthy from Athletica Physical Health returns to the Humanley podcast to explain why. We also talk about the real cause of pain, inflammation, the non-sense of RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) for injuries and practical strategies to help support musculoskeletal health.

Emrys is a musculoskeletal therapist with over 10 years clinical and lecturing experience and currently treats clients at his clinic "Athletica Physical Health".

Drug companies make drugs.

Many drugs are made by isolating a single chemical from a plant.

Drugs suppress symptoms.

Not everyone wants to take a drug so they seek alternatives.

Drug companies make those too, they're called vitamins...

...except drug companies don't make vitamins by isolating them from foods...

They synthesise vitamins in labs from toxic chemicals.

Drug companies tell you you're sick because you're deficient in their product...a 'vitamin'.

You try and correct the deficiency by taking vitamins.

You feel better when you take vitamins....so they must be doing something good, right?

Vitamins are classified as drugs.

Drugs suppress symptoms.

Stop taking your 'vitamins' and what happens? The problem comes back...

Vitamin therapy is not a part of nutrition, it's 'Orthomolecular Medicine'.

Pills won't fix your ills.

You cannot supplement your way out of a deficiency of real, fresh, local, seasonal, whole food.

What is the nature of our reality?

Do we have free will, or just the illusion of it? Some say the only thing we can control is how we respond to a situation. We can choose to be happy or sad; brave or fearful.

We are not our thoughts, nor are we our body, we are simply experiencing them.

Life is kind of like being on a rollercoaster. The destination is determined before the ride begins. It can be the most enjoyable, thrilling experience, or the most terrifying. The choice is yours.

Just like life, you cannot control how long the rollercoaster ride lasts, the twists and turns it takes, or where it ends.

We can either go with the flow and enjoy the experience, or we can fight against it every step of the way.

Enjoy every moment. Show kindness. Appreciate the small things. Forgive. Be grateful. Be brave. Love.

There are not thousands of different diseases, there is only one, it’s called 'allostasis'. Allostasis is the body in an active state of returning to 'homeostasis'.

The body only ever wants to be in a state of homeostasis or 'ease'. When homeostasis is disrupted, the body initiates a series of RESPONSES (ie signs and symptoms) to return to balance as quickly as possible.

Think of health and disease like balancing on an exercise ball. Your body is constantly making slight adaptations in order to maintain balance on that ball. This is analogous to being in a state of β€˜homeostasis’ or β€˜ease’. If someone comes and pushes you off the ball, you put your hands out to break your fall, stand up and then get back on the ball. Everything that your body does to get back on the ball and find balance again is analogous to being in a state of β€˜allostasis’ or β€˜dis-ease’.

β€˜Disease’ is β€˜healing’.

We're taking our moodle overseas to live with us. Unfortunately he had to receive several 'injections' to be able to travel. He received 3 shots in as many weeks.

He's never had a flea, or a tick, or parasite in his entire life. Nor has he had a 'shot' or any worm or flea treatments. I remember thinking to myself "What are the chances he gets a tick after he gets injected".

Sure enough I found a 'paralysis tick' on him the other day. I removed it, consulted the vet & monitored him for 48 hours. He is fine.

This got me wondering whether the tick was there to serve a purpose; to help remove the toxic substances (like heavy metals) that were injected in to his body?

Did the tick just infect him randomly, or was his little body sending out signals for ticks in the environment to latch on & start helping his body detoxify?

There is certainly some evidence to suggest that ticks bio-accumulate heavy metals, so maybe this idea isn't as far fetched as it seems.

Much to ponder.

What does a Princeton University Professor of History have to do with Louis Pasteur?

Well in 1971, Louis Pasteur's laboratory notebooks were released to the public by his grandson, despite Pasteur demanding that his family never release them.

Princeton Professor Gerald Geison spent 18 years reading through more than 100 of Pasteur's notebooks and published experiments. He found that Pasteur had committed scientific fraud over and over and over again. Geison published his findings in a book titled "The Private Science of Louis Pasteur" in 1995.

The entire basis of germ theory rests upon Pasteur's work. It's been shown to be fraudulent. Game over.

How much proof do people need to be shown?

The below image is a book review of Geison's work, written by Steve Sturdy, Professor of the Sociology of Medical Knowledge at the University of Edinburgh.

If you build a house on a compromised foundation, even if the building looks strong from the outside, the foundation still remains weak. Sometimes the best thing to do is knock it all down and start from scratch.

Louis Pasteur's experiments form the foundation of germ theory. Time and time again his work has been shown to be fraudulent as well as failing to adhere to the scientific method. If the foundation of germ theory is compromised, maybe it's time to knock it down and start again?

Why do people get candida 'overgrowth'?

In acidic environments, Candida grows in the yeast form. It uses amino acids as a fuel source to produce ammonia which is alkaline, thereby increasing the pH of the environment.

In alkaline environments, Candida grows in the hyphae form. It uses glucose as a fuel source to produce pyruvic acid and H+ ions which are acidic, thereby decreasing the pH.

When the pH of a mucous membrane becomes too acidic or too alkaline, Candida pleomorphs in to the respective form and begins increasing the catabolism of amino acids or sugar to restore pH balance.

In simple terms, when the pH gets out of wack, Candida comes along to solve the problem. It is not the cause of the problem.

This is a slide from my presentation called The Microbiome.

Our entire lives we have been told there are germs floating through the air that are out to get us, yet no one has ever observed such a thing with their own two eyes.

If there are no germs in the air, then disease cannot be caught. This also means that germs are a direct consequence of the environment (ie terrain) and their presence is not random.

Many people are probably aware of the debate between Pasteur and Bèchamp, but may not be aware of other controversies taking place around the same time. During the mid 1800's, Felix Pouchet was locked in a heated debate with Pasteur about the origin of microorganisms. Pasteur argued they came 'from the air', whereas Pouchet argued germs arose spontaneously from the environment. Pouchet believed that there were basic units existing in nature that could give rise to any microorganism, depending on the environmental conditions - just like a stem cell can morph into any cell in the human body.

Pouchet conducted many experiments demonstrating spontaneous generation, as did other scientists like Henry Bastian and at least a dozen others.

The theory of spontaneous generation was all but relegated to the waste paper basket following the release of Pasteur's germ theory. It's interesting that Pasteur was so adamant germs could not be generated spontaneously, considering he was a proponent of the theory himself, just a few years prior. Germ theory could never possibly be accepted as long as spontaneous generation stood in the way. Pasteur had to disprove spontaneous generation in order for the germ theory to be accepted.

Many modern day scientists, philosophers and historians have reviewed Pasteurs work on spontaneous generation and have concluded that his experiments do not disprove the theory at all.

The germ is nothing; the terrain is everything.

Mother nature is not out to get us.

The environment determines the germ; the germ does not determine the environment.

There are many things we have been taught about disease, which are not true.

We have been conditioned to think that;

1. Disease is just a part of life.

2. Disease is a bad thing.

3. The body cannot heal itself.

4. Chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer are normal.

5. No one knows what is causing chronic disease.

6. Signs and symptoms are the problem.

7. Suppressing symptoms is the only option.

The fact of the matter is;

1. Chronic disease is not just a part of life. It is not normal. Nature doesn't do disease, humans do. Disease is simply a consequence of living in disharmony with nature.

2. Disease is a good thing - it is the healing response. Disease is the body in an active state of returning to homeostasis. It is the effect of harmful inputs.

3. The body has a remarkable capacity to heal itself. Healing is simple when you give the body what it needs, remove what it doesn't need and then get out of the way.

4. Chronic diseases are a consequence of living in chronic disharmony with nature.

5. Disease is caused by thee things; deficiency, toxicity and trauma (emotional and psychological).

6. Signs and symptoms are the healing response. They are not the cause of the problem.

7. Suppressing symptoms is essentially suppressing the body's attempt to heal itself.

You can heal yourself.

Any electrician will tell you that an electrical system needs to be grounded. Humans are electrical beings and therefore we need to be grounded too.

Wearing shoes prevents the discharge of positively charged particles (protons or H+) into the ground and inhibits the acceptance of negatively charged particles (electrons) from the Earth. This results in a build up of H+ in the body, leading to acidification and disease.

Imagine you put shoes on your dog, day in, day out. Your dog develops a disease so you take it to the vet. What do you think the first thing the vet would tell you to do? Take the dogs shoes off, of course! No other animals in nature wear shoes, so why are humans any different?

Listen to Episode 52 of the Humanley podcast with Dr. Gaetan Chevalier for more information about the importance of grounding.

Being depressed or anxious can be really debilitating. I should know, I spent two decades of my life suffering depression and anxiety. I was in a dark place, not wanting to be here anymore, quite literally drinking myself to death.

Over the years I tried all of the usual approaches. GP's, psychologists, psychotherapists, hypnotherapists, none of which worked. Anti-depressants only made things worse. No matter what I did, I couldn't shake the darkness hanging over my head.

Why didn't any of these things work? Because they were all trying to 'treat' the depression. They saw depression as the problem, something that my body was doing wrong, that had to be fixed. They were trying to fix the solution, not the problem.

Determined to find an answer, I began thinking about what depression actually is. In my training as a naturopath, I was taught to identify and treat the cause of the problem. So I began wondering, what is depression and what is the cause?

After many years, it suddenly dawned on me, depression is not the problem, it is the body's response to the problem. Have you ever put your hand on a hot plate? What happens? You pull your hand away immediately, without thinking. It's your body's inbuilt protection mechanism, warning you to stop doing what you are doing.

The same thing happens with depression. When you are doing things in your life which are incongruent with who you really are and what your true calling is, how is your body going to warn you to change paths? By making you feel depressed. Why would your body want to make you feel good when you are doing things that go against who you really are every single day? Forcing yourself to do something you loathe, is like putting your hand on the proverbial hot plate.

The most drastic change for me happened when I quit my job. Every day for several years there was a knawing sensation inside me, something telling me to quit. I never listened to my body because I thought the job was the answer to get the things I wanted in my life. Little did I know that I was paddling up stream. No wonder I felt exhausted all the time. The feeling got so strong it made me physically ill. The voice inside me was literally screaming at me to quit.

Then one day, I quit. And guess what happened? My depression started lifting almost immediately. I started doing the things I wanted to do. I began listening to my inner self, living congruently with who I am. Letting go. Going with the flow. Following my dreams. Being who I am.

When I began doing these things, the depression went away simply because my body no longer needed to put out continual warning signs that I was on the wrong path.

Two years ago I didn't want to be here anymore. Yesterday I was telling my partner how grateful I am for being alive.

My mental health changed when I started living my life, doing what I wanted to do, being who I truly am, listening to my body and trusting my inner guiding voice.

Everyone has the power to make positive change. Nothing is impossible, everything is possible, including living a happy and fulfilling life.

The other day I noticed ants eating a piece of meat on the ground. I watched in fascination as thousands of tiny black dots swarmed all over the morsel. Within the hour, the ants and the meat were gone.

They had quite literally devoured something orders of magnitude bigger than they were, before my very eyes. What a privilege it was to observe mother nature's clean up crew in action.

Watching these ants, I couldn't help but to draw parallels between them and bacteria. The ants didn't kill the meat, it was already dead, they were simply there to clean up the mess - just like bacteria. No one would claim the meat had an 'ant infection'.

You will seldom see ants trying to eat a healthy, living animal. Only when that animal dies do the ants take action. Bacteria are the same, they don't attack or destroy healthy tissue. They are saprophytic, consuming only dead and dying tissue.

By observing mother nature we can learn a lot about the human body and how it functions.

When someone has a 'disease' such as hepatitis, white blood cells like neutrophils migrate to the liver tissue. No one blames the neutrophils as the cause of the problem, they are there to clean up the mess. The tissue damage occurs first & then the neutrophils respond. No one thinks they have a 'neutrophil infection'.

Bacteria are as much a part of us as neutrophils. They do a very similar job as neutrophils, except bacteria are usually found on the external body surfaces. White blood cells on the other hand are typically found inside the body.

During an 'infection', bacteria are almost always present, but does this mean they have caused the problem?

Blaming bacteria as the cause of the problem & then trying to eradicate them with antibiotics makes as much sense as blaming hepatitis on neutrophils & attempting to destroy them with toxic immunosuppressants.

We have confused the body's response to a problem as the cause of the problem.

It's time for a paradigm shift.

Modern Westernised society has us distracted. We are so caught up with things that don't matter, we forget about the things that do. We have been conditioned into wanting to accumulate stuff that is meaningless and then having to work a slave job to pay for it.

As a consequence we take for granted all the things that really matter. When we take a moment to look objectively and see things for what they really are, it becomes apparent that there are only a handful of things that truly matter in this experience called life.

Good health, joy, love, happiness and freedom are at the top of the list. Life becomes far less meaningful without them. Most people only begin to appreciate these things when they are gone and will do everything they can to get them back.

Starting today, take a few moments everyday to show gratitude. Tell your loved ones you love them. Thank your body for everything it does. Go outside in nature and just be. Be grateful that you are free and have food to eat, a warm bed and a roof over your head. Help someone less fortunate than you. Give back. Forgive. Let go of feelings and emotions that don't serve you anymore. Be present. Be kind.

Starting today, focus on cherishing the small things. Appreciate every single moment because one day you will look back and wish you had.

My dog got something in his eye the other day. I picked it out and he was fine. Today I noticed he has a little bit of gunk in that eye.

Many would argue the reason his eye got 'infected' was because of 'bad' bacteria.

Why do we think it's a bacterial infection? We see bacteria there, so they must be the culprit!

Every day peoples eyes are constantly coming in contact with 'germs' in the air. So why aren't we all walking around with eye infections?

Is it possible a little bit of debris was still in his eye? What if the 'infection' is the eyes microbiome breaking down the debris to clear it from the body?

Could the bacteria be assisting in the tissue repair process? Were the bacteria the problem, or the answer to the problem?

If you believe the bacteria caused the problem, present your best scientific evidence and explain why.

If you believe there is another explanation, present your best scientific evidence and explain why.
