The Falkirk wheel: A unique rotating boat lift
This boat lift connects, like many boat lifts, two canals, in this case the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal in Scotland, allowing boats to overcome a height difference of 35 meters. However, it uses an unique mechanism not seen anywhere else in the world: boats enter one of the caissons (the large water-filled box that holds the boats in a boat lift) at the top or the bottom and then are lifted or lowered via rotation. Aside from being traffic infrastructure, it is also a popular destination for visitors.
It was opened in 2002 as a replacement for the flight of 11 locks that had been used until the early 1930s, having been dismantled in 1933. Traveling through them was a slow process that took about a day.
About 1000 workers used 1,200 tons of steel and 15,000 bolts to build the boat lift, and the two caissons, weighing hundreds of tones on their own, hold 500,000 liters of water. The water isn’t spread equally between the two, instead the top one takes more water to make gravity help push the lift down and thus save a high amount of energy that would otherwise be necessary. As a result, it only uses 1.5 kWh per turn, less than is necessary to boil 20 liters of water in typical electric kettles.
