Hookah industry in Indonesia, Bali 🇮🇩
Indonesia is one of the leaders of Asian Hookah Industry, and the potential Country-Booster of Hookah Culture in the world (no matter how loudly sounded), I will try to explain why:
1. Population: 275 million;
2. Religion: 90% Muslim;
3. 1st Economy of Southeast Asia;
4. Coconut charcoal Exporter World Leader;
5. Growing tobacco leaf: Burley, Golden Virginia (Kasturi);
6. Manufacture of hookah tobacco: Tombacco, Doobacco;
7. Hookah production: KalyanBali;
8. Official Tobacco Distribution: Alfakher, Adalya, Mazaya, Tangiers, Darkside, Musthave, Duft;
9. Official distribution of hookah brands: Aladin (Germany), Steamulation (Germany), Mr.Wood (Turkey), HooTip (Russia), KS (Germany), Mr.EDS (Turkey).
And now about hookah inside Bali.
1. The prevailing number of distributors of hookah brands that were mentioned above is registered here;
3. The modern style of smoking began to emerge in Bali in 2019, now is in the phase of active growth (plus-minus Russia in 2016);
4. On the island there is a chain of hookah lounges EDENHOOKAHCLUB (on average, 100 hookahs only in Eden Seminyak are serving a day), Hookah Place is also represented. Prices for hookahs in these institutions from 250.000IDR ~ $16.5;
5. Hookah Stores with a decent range of devices, tobacco: MyShishaBali, MR & MRS Butler, Fusion. For example, prices for tobacco: Darkside 100g - 215.000IDR ~ $14, Musthave / Duft 100g - 190.000IDR ~ $12.5, Adalya 50g - 43.000IDR ~ $2.80, Alfakher 250g - 220.000 ~ $14.5; Charcoal 1kg - 60.000IDR ~ $4.

Carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide?
The problems of carbon monoxide poisoning have been talked about since the time when a person has learned to adapt the hearth in his home.
Let's figure out what carbon monoxide is, how it is formed and why it is dangerous.
Carbon monoxide.
CO is the formula for carbon monoxide. One molecule of carbon and one molecule of oxygen. Gas is formed in a space where carbon burns, for example: a home stove that contains solid fuel.
Coal burns by donating carbon molecules to oxygen. Normally, one molecule of carbon (C) attaches two molecules of oxygen (O) to form harmless carbon dioxide (CO2).
But, when oxygen is not enough, it (C) gets only one molecule (O), forming the same carbon monoxide (CO). Here we have only one molecule of oxygen, so scientists' minds call like this: "Carbon monoxide."
It is for this reason that it is required to follow the safety rules when a person heats a stove in the house. It is necessary to provide the furnace with sufficient oxygen so that all the carbon has enough fuel for combustion.
Carbon monoxide is odorless. If it did, it could be quickly detected and save the indoor air quality situation.
So: carbon monoxide is unburned fuel. (The wording is not scientific, but I think that it is very logical). So, now that this is clear, we'll quickly settle the issue of carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide is formed during the complete combustion of fuel. It occurs both in fire and in our body. All cells in our body "eat" oxygen, and give off carbon dioxide, which leaves us through the lungs.
Faraday compared a person to a burning candle, hinting that in fact the same thing happens both there and there!
This gas is not just garbage that needs to be urgently removed from the body. It plays an important role in life. For example: without it, we would not be able to breathe at all! Because our brain has a respiratory center that sends us the command to breathe in response to the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood.
Cigarettes are the record holder for carbon monoxide, since here we can say that we are breathing over a fire. Literally.
Hookah - yes, coal gives a small amount of carbon monoxide, but the main part of the coal is enriched with oxygen enough and more carbon dioxide falls into the hookah than carbon monoxide.
Vaporizers (electronic cigarettes, pods and vapes) - in fact, should be completely devoid of carbon monoxide, since here we are really dealing with heating, but not with combustion.
IQOS and GLO are the dessert of the program! Yes, there is no combustion here either and this is a working way to replace cigarettes, in my opinion.
But, many users complain that iQOS makes them change ammo frequently. It is difficult for heavy cigarette smokers to be friends with IQOS, as their habit of getting carbon monoxide has not gone away either! Cigarette smoker buys not only nicotine, but also a portion of "suffocating" euphoria. But IQOS cannot give it.
Okay, carbon monoxide is a bad thing, but why?
Here we must remember how oxygen enters our cells. Go. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin. When we breathe, hemoglobin takes oxygen from the lungs, turning into oxyhemoglobin. The red blood cell then carries these passengers throughout the system. Cells feed, use oxygen, generate heat, and everything is fine.
But, if there is a lot of carbon monoxide in space, then hemoglobin will take it instead of oxygen, turning into carboxyhemoglobin. The cells were waiting for red blood cells to take normal fuel, but he brought them low-quality raw materials.
Carboxyhemoglobin is a strong compound of hemoglobin and carbon monoxide. An excess of carboxyhemoglobin in the blood leads to oxygen starvation, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or even death, since the carbon monoxide associated with hemoglobin deprives it of the ability to attach oxygen to itself.
That's all - I hope we have drawn a line between the both gases.

Associative mixology
Associative mixology is an author's concept, belonging to a purely hookah industry. Although, here, with its basics going into big marketing. For example, in an advertisement for some juice, we are shown not only its rational advantages (quality, naturalness, lack of impurities and preservatives, vitamins and health benefits), but also the emotional benefits of using the product: a happy and loving family at the same table in a beautiful light at home or in the summer on a flowering summer cottage.
A person is an irrational being and it is much easier to reach him with the help of emotions than even with a lot of rational arguments.
Therefore, some emotional "anchors" are "attached" to many products of the hookah market. I would divide them into two types: memories and imagination. Turning to memories allows you to wake up those bright and pleasant emotions that a person has already experienced once about a situation. If we turn to the imagination, then, on the contrary, we create in a person’s head a certain image of the still future, but possible and desired, emotional experience.
The same effect can be found when you read the descriptions of tastes from different manufacturers and see wordings like: “like in the summer with my grandmother in the country”, “the same taste from childhood”, “remember that vacation by the sea”, etc.
As for the imagination, here they often turn to dreams and the future result: imagine yourself cool, rich, influential, free, beautiful, in demand, etc.
The more accurately we get into the emotions of the audience with the help of a vivid figurative picture (verbal description, color, sound, smell, taste), the more successful our product is and the more responsive the consumer's reaction to it is.
Associative mixology is able to "work" with both memories and imagination, and is generally aimed at expanding the emotional user experience. And a new positive experience is, ultimately, what we all strive for.
You could meet in many lounges and ferrets such a way of serving hookah, in which the master not only describes the composition of the mix, but also colorfully tells you some kind of story, real or imaginary, designed to evoke in the guest just those very emotional associative connections.
For example, you order something tropical and they collect the taste of that “sunset in Bali” for you. Or you want to smoke something unusual and the master fantasizes about the taste of “ice cream on a spaceship that is going on an expedition to Mars.” The options here are endless and it all depends on the human imagination.
This is a cool interactive that allows you to at least get emotions in the moment, even if the association itself seems not so obvious to you.
Hookah is generally about emotions. And it would be, in my opinion, wrong to deprive yourself of the opportunity to experience them, reducing the ritual of smoking to a normal physiological need.
And associative mixology is a cool tool that I encourage you to experiment with if you haven't already.
For example, the next time you go to a hookah bar, try to make some kind of non-standard order using associative mixology. Describe your most vivid memory, dream, fantasy, dream, favorite book, movie (whatever) and see what mix you end up with. Do not be afraid to look strange, because 90% of the masters will definitely join this “game” and will themselves enjoy fulfilling an unusual request.
And it can also be an interesting entertainment for your hookah party with friends. Collect mixes for each other based on associations. I think surprises, discoveries and unexpected twists and turns are provided for you.

The use of tobacco is about 12,300 years old
Scientists have established the time of detection of a harmful infection.
American archaeologists excavating a Late Pleistocene site in Utah are charred by tobacco seeds thought to be in the category of average human beings used for chewing. The age of the site is about 12,300 years. It turns out that the natives of North America started using tobacco on the initiative of thousands of years before considering it to be about the freedom of finds among curated pipes. The article was published in the journal Nature Human Behavior.
The tradition of smoking and chewing tobacco originates with the emergence of the peoples of America, and then, after the discovery of the New World, spread throughout the world. According to scientists, no plant has used such research in human society.
Anthropologists believe that tobacco began to be actively used for ritual purposes, starting from the period of cultural agriculture. The earliest finds of smoking pipes with traces of tobacco in the US South are 3,300 years old. Fragments of ceramic pipes archaeologists also occur in more ancient cultural layers - up to 4800 years.
However, it is recognized that all these defects most likely appear at the time characteristic of smoking, and acquaintance with tobacco and the onset of infection early early, perhaps as soon as the first settlers appeared on the American continent at the end of the Pleistocene.
Scientists from the Far West Anthropological Research Group have unearthed 12,300-year-old hunter-gatherer remains with an intact hearth at the Wishbone site in Utah's Great Salt Lake Desert. The hearth is surrounded by stone and bone artifacts, and inside, archaeologists have found charred tobacco seeds.
The complex of accompanying finds - charred bone, animal bones, as well as typical spearheads for hunting big game - led the authors to the fact that predators did not use tobacco as fuel and did not eat it. Scientists have established that they chewed consumption of tobacco, as representatives of some Indian breeds still do.
The grains found by archaeologists are wild varieties of tobacco. This is due to the fact that people used tobacco, getting it before they learned how to cultivate it. At present, the excavation area is an absolutely lifeless desert, but in the period from 13 thousand to 9.5 years ago, according to scientists, there was an extensive swampy floodplain that served the distribution of natural hunters.
They pitched their sentencing camps separating swamps and river channels with the willow that grew here as the main fuel for fires. But tobacco did not grow in this area. Scientists believe that tall people were specially sent to collect tobacco in higher areas.
