A modern form of Vishwarupa Vishnu.

19th c. Bronze. It doesn’t follow the descriptions given in our old scriptures like the ancient murtis did, hence becomes a trifle difficult to identify.
~ now kept at the National Museums, Scotland.

158th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda

He was a Hindu monk and a patriotic saint of India. According to English calendar he was born on 12th January 1863 into an aristocratic Bengali family of Calcutta. (Death 1902); According to Hindu calendar Vivekananda was born on Krishna Paksha Saptami after seven days of Paush Purnima. His birthday is also celebrated according to Hindu calendar and this day is known as Swami Vivekananda Jayanti. As Jayanti day is decided based on Hindu calendar, it is not fixed on Gregorian calendar like Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti which is celebrated on fixed day on Gregorian calendar.

However Indian government has decided to observe Swami Vivekananda's Gregorian date of birth as National Youth Day. Hence National Youth Day of India is celebrated each year on 12th January since 1985.

Swami Vivekananda was modern Hindu saint and follower of Vedanta philosophy of Hinduism. He was disciple of Ramakrishna. He founded Belur Math, Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission.

Bhogi • Bhogi Pandigai

In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, Sankranti is celebrated for 4 days. The certain rituals are followed during each of the 4 days & those days are known as,

• Day 1 - Bhogi which is also known as Bhogi Pandigai.
• Day 2 - Makara Sankranti, which is known as Pedda Panduga in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana & Pongal in Tamil Nadu.
• Day 3 - Kanuma Panduga in Andhra Pradesh and Mattu Pongal in Tamil Nadu.
• Day 4 - Mukkanuma in Andhra Pradesh and Kaanum Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

Bhogi is the 1st day of the 4 days Sankranti festivities & it is observed one day before of main Makara Sankranti day. On Bhogi day, people discard old and derelict items which are no longer in use. People get up before dawn & light bonfire, famously known as Bhogi Mantalu, with wood and other solid fuels. Derelict wooden items at home are offered to the fire as a Bhogi ritual. People also lit crackers early in the morning.

Makar Sankranthi • Pongal • Uttarayan • Maghi

The duration of forty Ghatis is known as Punya Kaal. Sankranti activities, like taking bath, offering Naivedhya (food offered to deity) to Lord Surya, offering charity or Dakshina, performing Shraddha rituals and breaking fast or Parana, should be done during Punya Kaal.

If Makar Sankranti happens after Sunset then all Punya Kaal activities are postponed till next day Sunrise. Hence all Punya Kaal activities should be done in day time.

In Tamil Nadu Makar Sankranti or Sankranthi is known as Pongal. In Gujarat and Rajasthan Makar Sankranti is known as Uttarayana. In Haryana and Punjab Makar Sankranti is known as Maghi.
