🟢This question has come up a number of times, so I thought it would be beneficial to give a brief explanation of the ruling, insha’Allah.

Is It Permissible to Send Blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ When the Khateeb Mentions Him during the Friday Khutbah?

If the khateeb mentions the Prophet ﷺ during the Friday khutbah, the listener may quietly say, “Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam,” without raising his voice, and then continue listening to the khutbah.

A number of scholars permitted this, including Shaykh Ibn Baz, may Allah have mercy upon him. Sending salat upon the Prophet ﷺ when he is mentioned is a prescribed form of dhikr and du‘a, and it is not the same as speaking to another person, so long as it is said quietly and briefly and does not disturb the khutbah.

Other scholars disliked or prohibited this while the khutbah is being delivered because of the obligation to remain silent and listen. They cited the statement of the Prophet ﷺ: “If you say to your companion on Friday, while the Imam is delivering the khutbah, ‘Be quiet,’ then you have engaged in idle speech.”

What appears closer is that there is no harm in sending salat upon the Prophet ﷺ when he is mentioned, as long as it is done quietly and briefly, without distracting oneself from the khutbah or disturbing others.

As for raising the voice or repeating it together as a group, that is not prescribed.

And Allah knows best
