The response may be presented from several angles:
First, al-Bukhari recorded the Hadith of Umm Habibah رضي الله عنها with its authentic chain of transmission and then included, at its conclusion, a statement from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr concerning Thuwaybah. This account is not a Prophetic Hadith attributed to the Prophet ﷺ. Rather, it is a mursal report, meaning that a link in its transmission is omitted. The chain reaches ʿUrwah, but he did not identify the person from whom he received the account of the dream. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar therefore stated:
“The report is mursal. ʿUrwah transmitted it without mentioning who narrated it to him.”
This does not call the authenticity of Sahih al-Bukhari into question. Al-Bukhari did not attribute the dream to the Prophet ﷺ or present it as an independent Prophetic Hadith meeting his conditions of authenticity. [Fath al-Bari by Ibn Hajar]
Second, the account describes a dream in which one of Abu Lahab’s relatives saw him after his death. It is neither revelation nor a report approved by the Prophet ﷺ. The dreams of anyone other than the Prophets cannot independently establish an Islamic ruling. The dreams of the Prophets are revelation, whereas the dreams of others may be true or mistaken. Consequently, they cannot institute an act of worship or assign religious significance to a particular time or occasion.
The dream of Abdullah ibn Zayd رضي الله عنه concerning the adhan does not contradict this principle. Abdullah presented his dream to the Prophet ﷺ, who confirmed it and instructed Bilal to call the adhan using the words revealed in the dream. The adhan was therefore established by the Prophet’s statement and command, not by the Companion’s dream independently. Had a Companion’s dream been an independent source of legislation, it would not have required the Prophet’s approval. [Sunan Abi Dawud]

As for the dream concerning Abu Lahab, there is no established evidence that it was presented to the Prophet ﷺ, approved by him, or made the basis of any ruling during his lifetime. Revelation ended with the death of the Prophet ﷺ; therefore, no subsequent dream can establish a new act of worship or religious ruling.
Third, al-Bukhari’s wording does not state that Abu Lahab freed Thuwaybah out of happiness over the Prophet’s birth ﷺ. Nor does it mention that his punishment is reduced every Monday or that he held any celebration or annual observance. It states only that he was given something to drink because he had freed Thuwaybah. The commonly circulated details concerning Monday and the announcement of the Prophet’s birth do not appear in al-Bukhari’s account. [Sahih al-Bukhari]
Fourth, even if the account’s contents were accepted, the most it would indicate is a recompense connected to freeing Thuwaybah. It provides no evidence for taking the Prophet’s birthday ﷺ as a recurring religious occasion. Using this isolated incident to justify an annual religious observance is an unwarranted transition from a particular event to a recurring act of worship without supporting evidence.
Fifth, acts of worship, including their designation for a particular time or manner, can be established only through evidence from the Qur’an or the Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever performs a deed that is not in accordance with our matter will have it rejected.” [Sahih Muslim 1718]
Therefore, this account neither establishes any special religious virtue for the day of the Mawlid nor proves the permissibility of taking it as a recurring religious occasion. It is not a Hadith or a source of religious legislation, and al-Bukhari’s wording contains no reference to the annual celebration for which it is cited as evidence.

The number of people practicing something does not turn an innovation into a Sunnah, just as the small number of people adhering to a Sunnah does not make it false.
The standard is the evidence and the way of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions.
An innovation may become familiar over the centuries until people assume that it is part of the religion, even though it was unknown during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, his Companions, and the virtuous generations.

If it were a purely social gathering, with no intention of seeking religious reward and no connection to a date believed to possess special virtue, it would be governed by the general rulings of customs.
However, when a day is specified for a religious reason and includes recitation, devotional poetry, and charity intended to honor the occasion and earn reward, it becomes an act of religious devotion.
The governing principle for acts of devotion is that they require revelation. They cannot be established without evidence.

Studying and teaching the Prophet’s biography is among the finest deeds, but it should not be restricted to one day or to an introduced religious occasion.
The Sunnah is for the Prophet’s biography to be taught throughout the year and for its effects to appear in our beliefs, worship, character, and dealings.
The objection is not to teaching the Prophet’s biography. It is to connecting it to an annual devotional occasion that neither the Prophet ﷺ nor his Companions observed.

There is no dispute that the Prophet’s mission is among Allah’s greatest mercies and that believers rejoice in Islam, the Qur’an, and the sending of the Messenger ﷺ.
However, Allah’s statement, “In that let them rejoice” [Youns - 58], does not specify an annual day, a particular gathering, or a prescribed form of celebration.
General evidence establishing the legitimacy of rejoicing does not establish a specified time and act of worship. The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions understood these verses, yet they never made the day of his birth an annual religious occasion.

The fast of Ashura was not established through mere analogy or personal approval. The Prophet ﷺ himself legislated it. He fasted and commanded others to fast after being informed that Allah had saved Moses on that day.
The Prophet’s birth was known during the time of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions, yet they did not legislate an annual celebration for it.
The difference is that Ashura was established through an explicit text, prophetic action, and prophetic command. Celebrating the Mawlid was not established through a text, action, or approval. Analogy cannot create a time, specific act of worship when the Legislator left that occasion unspecified despite its cause being present.

The authenticity of this report is disputed. Al-Bayhaqi declared its well-known chain objectionable, al-Nawawi declared it false, while some later scholars authenticated it through other routes.
Even if its authenticity were assumed, it would establish only that the Prophet ﷺ performed a single aqiqah for himself. Aqiqah is an established act of worship with known rulings. The report would not establish an annual gathering or recurring celebration of his birth.
Establishing a single aqiqah does not establish the Mawlid, because the two actions differ in their nature, cause, manner, and repetition.

Poetry praising the Prophet ﷺ is permissible when it is free from exaggeration and other religious violations. The Prophet ﷺ approved Hassan ibn Thabit’s poetry and instructed him to defend him.
This establishes the permissibility of appropriate poetry. It does not establish specifying the Prophet’s birthday for an annual gathering.
The disagreement is not about praise in itself. It concerns taking a particular date as a recurring religious occasion. Evidence permitting an unrestricted deed does not establish restricting it

Merely taking the Mawlid as a religious occasion is an innovation, but it is not shirk in itself.
However, supplicating to the Prophet ﷺ besides Allah, seeking from him what only Allah can provide, or believing that he independently controls the universe or possesses knowledge of the unseen constitutes major shirk.
A religious innovation should not be declared shirk without evidence, nor should actual shirk be minimized under the claim of loving the Prophet ﷺ.

Loving the Prophet ﷺ is not a once-a-year occasion. It is a continuous act of worship demonstrated through obeying him, following his Sunnah, invoking Allah’s peace and blessings upon him, studying his biography, and spreading the message he brought.
The Companions possessed the most complete love and reverence for the Prophet ﷺ. What Allah legislated was sufficient for them, and they did not need to introduce an occasion that Allah had not authorized.
All goodness lies in following those who preceded us, and harm lies in the religious innovations introduced by those who came later.
We ask Allah to grant us sincerity in our intentions, correctness in our deeds, and steadfast adherence to the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the righteous predecessors.
