Fasting on the day of Ashura is among the established Sunnah practices of the Prophet ﷺ, and authentic hadiths have indicated its virtue and status. The Prophet ﷺ also clarified its merit and position.
Among that is what has been authentically reported from the noble Companion Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “I never saw the Prophet ﷺ so keen on fasting a day that he preferred over others except this day, the day of Ashura, and this month, meaning Ramadan.”
This indicates that the Prophet ﷺ was keen to fast it, meaning he intentionally sought it out and was eager for it due to its great virtue. It has also been authentically reported in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on the day of Ashura, and he said: “It expiates the sins of the previous year.”
Levels of fasting on the day of Ashura:
1) The most complete, according to most scholars: fasting the ninth day along with the tenth; based on the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: “If I live until next year, I will surely fast the ninth.”
2) Less than that: fasting the day of Ashura alone, and its virtue is established by his saying ﷺ: “It expiates the sins of the previous year.”
Accordingly, it is prescribed for the Muslim to be keen upon this great Sunnah, and to achieve following the Prophet ﷺ and sincerity, for deeds are not accepted except with them.
And Allah knows best.

A reminder to fast on the 9th of Muḥarram (Wednesday, 25 June): it is authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “If I live until next year, I will certainly fast the ninth day,” as an encouragement to differ from the People of the Book.
And a reminder to fast on the Day Ashura, the 10th of Muḥarram (Thursday, 26 June): the Prophet ﷺ said, “Fasting the Day of Ashura, I hope from Allah that it will expiate the sins of the previous year.”
May Allah help us in obeying Him, and grant us acceptance.

Allah the Almighty said: (And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed, Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy) [Al-Isra: 53].
This ayah is a great foundation in refining the tongue and teaching the believer how to address others. Allah the Almighty has commanded His servants to choose the best words and to select the finest expressions, because a good word reforms hearts, brings people together, and closes the doors of conflict. In contrast, a bad word is a gateway for Satan, through which he causes enmity, hatred, and disputes.
Among the well-known sayings of the righteous predecessors: “A person is hidden beneath his tongue, and a man’s virtue is known through the goodness of his speech.”
The approach of the righteous predecessors was that a Muslim should choose his words carefully, just as he chooses the finest fruit; he speaks the truth, benefits people, and avoids what has no goodness in it, because a kind word is an act of worship and its impact remains.
The scholars of Tafsir have explained this meaning clearly:
Among what Ibn Kathir رحمه الله mentioned in his interpretation of the ayah is that Allah commanded His Prophet ﷺ to instruct the believers that their conversations and discussions should be with the best and finest words, because failing to do so allows Satan to corrupt the relationship between them, turning a verbal disagreement into a dispute and then into fighting. He is the enemy of mankind who constantly strives to spread discord among people.
Among what Al-Tabari رحمه الله mentioned: the believer should respond to harm with kindness, and should not repay his brother with the same kind of words. Rather, he should ask Allah to grant him mercy and forgiveness, because Satan corrupts conversations and stirs up evil among people. His enmity toward mankind is ancient, dating back to his envy of our father Adam peace be upon him.
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.” Agreed upon.
From all these texts, it becomes clear that choosing the best words is an act of worship through which a servant draws closer to Allah. A kind word is a cause for bringing hearts together, improving relationships, and spreading affection among people. It is also one of the greatest means of blocking Satan’s ways. Therefore, Allah guided His servants to the highest level of good speech: they should not be content with merely good words, but should choose what is best; meaning the most gentle expressions, the most beautiful in manners, and the furthest from provoking people’s feelings. Allah said: (And tell My servants to say that which is best). Whoever adopts this Qur’anic manner will protect his tongue, preserve his relationships, contribute to the reform of his society, and attain the pleasure of his Lord.
A word may be a reason for bringing hearts together or dividing them, and it may be a door to affection or a path to conflict. Therefore, it is wisdom for the believer to choose the finest words. How many disputes have started with a word, and how many friendships have remained because of a kind word.

Advice to the Student of Knowledge
O student of knowledge, you should not turn away from knowledge, for it is the inheritance of the Prophets. Through it, you come to know your Lord, worship Him with clear understanding, and distinguish between the Sunnah and innovation, and between guidance and misguidance.
Do not make this world and its demands an excuse for abandoning the pursuit of knowledge. Among the wealthy Companions were scholars, jurists, and leaders, such as ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan, Talhah, al-Zubayr, and ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf, may Allah be pleased with them all. Their wealth did not distract them from the religion, nor did their trade prevent them from seeking knowledge and acting upon it.
Do not look at the length of the road; look instead at the nobility of the destination. Seek the help of the One who promised guidance to those who strive for His sake. He, Glorified is He, said: “As for those who strive for Our sake, We will surely guide them to Our ways.”
Know that knowledge is not gained all at once. It is gained through patience, consistency, and sincere dependence upon Allah. Do not burden yourself with more than you can bear, but do not cut yourself off from seeking knowledge. A small amount pursued consistently will grow, and knowledge repeatedly reviewed will become firmly rooted.
By Allah, it is better for you to meet Allah while still traveling upon the path of knowledge—reading a matter, memorizing an evidence, or acting upon a Sunnah—than to live in neglect and then regret it when regret is of no benefit.
Seek Allah’s help and do not give in to weakness. Be sincere in your pursuit, purify your intention, and act upon what you learn. Knowledge is sought so that it may produce action, reverence, and guidance.
Beware of abandoning the path. Whoever leaves the pursuit of knowledge after recognizing its worth has deprived himself of tremendous good and opened the door to ignorance and heedlessness.
So hold fast to high ambition, and hold fast to steadfastness. The days are passing, lives are coming to an end, and trials are many. Fortunate is the one who meets Allah while still walking the path of knowledge, honoring the Sunnah, acting upon what he knows, and calling to his Lord with clear understanding.
Do not turn back after you have recognized the road. Do not turn away from the inheritance of the Prophets. Ask Allah to make you among those who learn and then act, who act and remain sincere, and who remain steadfast until they meet their Lord.
You have been placed— إن شاء الله —upon the path, so keep moving forward.
