The Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing in 1989 were a large-scale demonstration that lasted from April 15 to June 4 and was suppressed by the Chinese government using military force. The main participants were students protesting against the Communist Party's monopoly on power and calling for democratic reforms. As a result of the crackdown, hundreds of people were killed, and many others were arrested.
