The Vatican's secret archives have long been a magnet for mystery - and now, alien intrigue.

Sprawling across more than 50 miles of underground shelving, these heavily guarded documents have fueled wild speculation for centuries. But some researchers now believe the Holy See could be sitting on the biggest secret of all: proof of extraterrestrial life.

As outlandish as it sounds, recent testimony by former US intelligence insiders claim the Vatican and American government have worked together to investigate, cover up and, most shockingly, study, UFOs.

Following the death of Pope Francis at age 88 on Easter Monday, UFO investigator and filmmaker Mark Christopher Lee is calling on the next pontiff to come clean. Lee, who has spent three decades studying the links between religion, history and alien phenomena, claims the Vatican may be harboring 'hundreds' of classified files on UFO sightings - some possibly dating back centuries. 

'If the Church is truly committed to spiritual truth and human enlightenment, then it must no longer suppress information that could fundamentally reshape our understanding of our place in the cosmos,' Lee said in a statement.

🤡UK scientists are to launch outdoor geoengineering experiments as part of a £50m government-funded program - mostly aimed at blocking sunlight reaching the Earth’s surface

The experiments will be small-scale and rigorously assessed, according to Advanced Research and Invention Agency (Aria), the UK government agency backing the plan, and will provide “critical” data needed to assess the potential of the technology. The programme, along with another £11m project, will make the UK one of the biggest funders of geoengineering research in the world.

Geoengineering is controversial and some previous planned outdoor experiments have been cancelled after strong opposition. Most geoengineering proposals aim to block sunlight reaching the Earth’s surface, for example by launching clouds of reflective particles into the atmosphere or using seawater sprays to make clouds brighter.

If successful, this could temporarily reduce surface temperatures and the harm the climate crisis is causing, giving more time for the deep cuts in global carbon emissions needed. Given the failure of the world to stop emissions rising to date, and the recent run of record hot years, backers of solar geoengineering say researching the issue is vital in case an emergency brake is needed.

The Justice Department on Tuesday canceled hundreds of grants to community organizations and local governments, including funding for gun-violence prevention programs, crime-victim advocacy and efforts to combat opioid addiction, according to an email obtained by The Washington Post.

Maureen Henneberg, the acting head of the Office of Justice Programs, which oversees the Justice Department grant program, told staff in the email that the canceled awards were identified through a weeks-long review process and did not align with the Trump administration’s priorities.

The grants sent millions of dollars to organizations that support intervention programs for nonviolent youth offenders; programs to avert opioid-related deaths in Newark; programs aimed at identifying community-based approaches to preventing hate crimes against Arab, Jewish and Asian Americans; and a confidential hotline run by the National Center for Victims of Crime to inform crime victims about their rights.

The Boston-based Community Resources for Justice, for example, lost $37 million spread over several grants. Some of those funds were used to provide crime data analysis and other services to local governments, according to government grant data. The organization did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday evening.
